Brown, appeared before the judge's stand and was ordered to jog over the course. After doing so, the judges—Mr. J. J. Davies, Mr. B. F. Longworth, and Mr. Wilson—declared ‘Messenger Boy’ the win- ner of the stallion race. Mr. Brown, after thanking the judges for their decision, verbally challenged any stallion to a race with ‘Messenger Boy,’ for the sum of $100. He then gave an interesting exhibition of ‘Messenger Loy’s’ speed. In this exhibition Mr. Brown showed ‘Messenger Boy’ to be not only a stepper and a stayer, but to be one of the fastest stallions in the Maritime Provinces. About fifteen minutes after this exhibition concluded, ‘Dean Swift’ ap- apeared on the track. The driver stated that he had been getting corks on ‘Dean Swift’s’ shoes. But as he did not inform the Judges to that effect during the hours they had been waiting, they infermed him of their decision, as above stated.

The three minute race, for a purse of $50 in three divisions, was next on the pro- gramme, and was called at one o'clock. The entries were-—

We did not see the beginning of the first heat, but the result will be found in the summary given below. In the second heat ‘Bismarck’ took the lead, with ‘Tibb’ clese by, followed by ‘Princess,’ leading the others in a bunch. On the first quarter ‘Princess’ took second place. All seemed to break more or less. ‘Bismarck’ still led and passed the half mile, doing good

work. Passing down the back stretch he broke and fell to the rear, ‘Tib’ went to the fore, but was ro-

lieved of that position at the three-quarter polo by ‘Fairy,’ who was trotting admir- ably. On the heme stretch ‘Princess’ pushed her rapidly, and made a splendid dash for first place, but failed; and ‘Fairy’ came in first, with ‘Princess’ at her wheel, and ‘Bismarck’ third, with the others closely following. ‘Bismarck’ was awarded the heat, ‘lairy’ second, ‘Princess’ third, ‘Lady Bagnall’ fourth, ‘Tib’ fifth, ‘Tanner Boy’ sixth. After a tiresome amount of scoring, the horses made a start on the third heat. ‘Tib’ took the poll by gallep- ing. She was followed by the others in rotation. Jefore reaching the haif mile ‘Princesss,’ who had been galloping cen- siderably, spurted to the front. She was followed by ‘Lady Bagnall,’ who was doing excellent work. ‘Fairy’ trotted lively after passing the half mile, and at the three quarter gave ‘Lady Bagnall’ the go-by, collared ‘Princess,’ and was making a desperate push for first place. She unfortunately broke, and ‘Princess’ maintained the lead and finished first, with ‘Fairy’ second, and ‘Lady Bagnall’ third. The heat was given to ‘Fairy’ for fair tret- ting; ‘Princess’ second; ‘Lady Bagnall third. ‘Tanner Boy’ and ‘Bismarck’ were distanced. The fourth heat was trotted in excellent style. ‘Lady Bagnall’ made a splendid ex- hibition of her speed, and made things hot for ‘Princess,’ who came in first, ‘Lady Bagnall’ second, ‘Fairy’ third, and ‘Tibb’ fourth. The fifth- heat was the last and prettiest of the race. ‘Lady Bagnall’ ap- eared to increase her speed, while ‘Fairy’ and ‘Tibb’ seemed to feel the effects of five heats. ‘Princess,’ however, maintained first place; ‘Lady Bagnall’ finished at her wheel; ‘Tibb’ third, and ‘Fairy’ fourth.

‘Princess’ won the race and first money ; ‘Fanny’ second; and ‘Lady Bagnall’ third.

The next was a running race between Mr. A. Hooper’s b m Fanny and Mr. R. Mitchell's b m Molly. On the first heat they went off abreast. Moliy took the lead and was leaving Fanny in the distance, At the quarter mile or turn, Fanny’s driver was thrown headlong from her back and she fell forward on ber shoulders, and cut her right fore leg. ‘Tbe driver was unhurt. He im- mediately renounted and gave chase to Moily and saved her distance. In the next heat Fanny led but she was soon passed by Molly, who finished, one hundred yards ahead.
