Mr. Marsaew Mitton’s house at Fairfield, N. B., was destroyed by fire on Monday evening. Mr. Milton was from home at the time. and his wife, who had gone toa neigh- hor's for a few minutes, found the house in flames on her return, Only a small portion of the furniture was saved.

Tux dwelling house of Jcremiah Brownell, at Lakeville, N. B.,was burned to the ground on Friday morning. When the fire was being lightedin the morning the chimney caught and while it was being extinguished the chim- ney fell down through the house. The result was the destruction of the house and contents.

Qcr readers will fully appreciate Mr. Welsh’s insinuation that the Hon. Donald Ferguson stated an untruth to the people of Queen's County in connection with Sir Charles Tupper’s telegram respecting the Subway. They will also appreciate Sir Charles Tupper’s manly defence of his absent friend. It is needless to say that Sir Charles was quite right. Mr. Ferguson never read such a telegram as Mr. Welsh stated he did.

_ We call the attention of the proper author- ities to the nuisances which exist on the St. Peter's Road leading to the cemeteries, in the shape of heaps of manure, ded pigs &. As this is now the principal promenade, especial- ly on Sunday afternoon, the road should be kept as well and clean as possible.

Mr. C. F. Fraser, accompanied by a num- ber of pupils of the Halifax School for the Blind, intend] giving a concert in this place in the course of a few weeks, when our citi- zens will have a chance of hearing some of the newest and most popular music. The quin- tette band of the School will take part in the programme.

A CORRESPONDENT declares that the state- ments of a friend of justice concerning the salary of Mr. McSwain are incorrect. Mr. McSwain himself says that previous to the amalgmation of the Prince of Wales College and Normal School, he received $700; after that event his salary was reduced to $500 and subsequently again it was raised to $550. We have only to add that in our opinion, the salaries of teachers in this Province are rather too low than too high.

Tue Electric Light Company have been making extensive improvements in their Station, corner of Water and Pownal Streets. fhe arrangement of the different machines has been changed, and a new 30-horse power engine manufactured by McKinnon & Me- Lean, and a new dynamo, have been put in. New switch boards, ete., have also been placed in position. Everything is now in thorough working order. At present they carry seventy-five lights, but have a capacity of one hundred and ten. Taken for all in all the Station may safely be classed among the best equipped in the Maritime provinces. We congratulate Superintendent Waddell.

JUVENILE ENTERTAINMENT.—A juvenile entertainment was held last evening in Mr. Power's conservatory, Bayfield Street, which was attended by a large number of the parents and friends of the children. A neat stage had been erected, and at the appointed hour the different performers were at their posts. Vocal and instrument- al music, songs and recitations made up the programme, and the manner in which the children performed their parts was highly creditable to amateurs. Owing to the af- fair having been announced previous to Miss Scott’s performance being advertized, many of those present regretted not being able to attend the latter, which probably accounts to some extent for the sparseness of the audience, but we learn that all are preparing to hear this talented actress to- night. —Com.

Collision With an Iceberg.

The British steamer Paola, Capt. Jones, from New York, May 4, for Sydney for coal, arrived to-night with her plates stove, by colliding vesterday with a sunken ice- berg. off Scaterie, causing her fore compart- ment to fill with water. Captain Jones reports that he saw several steamers and vessels stuck in the ice.
