(OP)-Saint John Beavers came back in the second period to trample cellar-dwelling Moncton Hawks 8-5 in a Maritime Major Hockey League game here Satur- day night. , liawks held a wide edge in play in the first period and outscored Beavers 2-0. But from there on the Monctonians were never in the picture as fheigaalmungry Beavers rapped in seven tallies to Hawks one in the second period.

Beavers netted another in the final frame while the best the Hawks could muster was a pair.

Local sporting fans who are look- ing for an outstanding evening oi entertainment should make their way to the Forum tonight where they will not only see a Maritime Senior Hockey League contest be- tween Islanders and Moncton 1-iawks. but a Broom Ball contest between the I... P. U. and City of Charlottetown employees.

Yes, it will not only be a pro- gram of sharp Big Four hockey. but one that will also produce ev- erything from side-splitting laughs to mass mayhem when the L. P. U. boys tangle with the City employ- ees in what they claim will be for the Broom Ball championship of North America.

It is a challenge match between the two teams that will be a re- vival of the Broom Bali sport that played such a prominent part in sporting activities here in years gone by. The same is slated to get underway at eight. otciock. and will consist of three. lo-minute per- iods with no time out, and it is to be one of those contests that only the fittest are expected to survive. The M. B. H. 1... contest will start at its usual time of 8:30.

saint Mary's squeezed out a close 2-1 verdict over Islanders at Halifax on Saturday night to end

a big-three game series between the two leading Maritime Senior Hockey League clubs in the space of five days. It was the most. num-- ber of times the two clubs have met in a single week this season and about three of the closest con- tests they have had With one an- other to date. I O 0

The Islanders were the big win- ners with two wins to one on the series, but were close wins in ev- ery instance, the locals nosing out Halifax 5-3 here on Tuesday, 6-4 at Halifax on Thursday, and los- ing the final encounter Saturday by a 2-1 margin. They were all rousing encounters too. that came up with smart hockey in every in- stance and went from one extreme to the other in the way of penal- ties.

In their meeting here on Tues- day. both teams had the book thrown at them in the' penalty bracket that saw one oi the larg- cst number of awards. 28. handed out this season. Although the Thursday meeting at Halifax was expected to be a repetition of that earlier contest, it was comparat- ively tame with only fifteen hand- ed out. In the final Saturday night so. both teams underwent an almost complete reformation when only the awards. one of the low- est of the season. were handed out.

A thing that is not often witnes- sed in a hockey contest was also I feature of the Saturday night clash-a scoreless and penalty free period. one may see one or the other. but seldom both in one frame. It took place in the first canto. and although the third was also a scoreless one. two penalties were handed out. strange as it may seem. the only period that produced any scoring. the second. also came up with the most penal- ties. The Queen square School hoc- keyilts copped off the City in- terscholastlc hockey championship for the third year in succession here at the Forum Saturday night when they swamped West Kent School 8-3 in a wide-open. free scoring flnsl league contest.

The vlctoi-y'gsve the title and the Bike Shop Trophy to the Q. S. S. boys by a one point margin over Prince Street School. the other team in the three-tesrn loop. Queen Square finished on top with three wins and I ion for six points, P. S. 5. second with two wins, a tie and a loss for five points. and West Kent in the cellar with a tie and three losses for one point.

Q. S. S. led by a score of 4-1 at the end of the first. 5-3 at the end of the second and bang- ed in three more without I re- ply in the closing session to wind it up with a five goal margin on the play. -

Thane Doyle was outstanding in the nets for the Q. S. 3. boys during hammering W.K.S. attacks while Forbes Kennedy. Jr.. play- ed a top brand of hockey for the losers to chalk up two of their three tallies.
