Tue Teemer-O'Coxxon Race.—In Pitts- burg, Pa., and in the vicinity of Teemer’s home, betting is $100 to $80 that Teemer will win his race with O'Connor. In Toronto, the home of O'Connor, the betting is just the other way at the same odds. Boston sports are putting up cash on Teemer. The winner will go to Australia to row Kemp.

Hawirax Prices.—The large quantities of P. EK. Island produce which arrived last week had the tendency of reducing the prices of potatoes and oats, the tormer from 30 and 35 cents per bushel to 27 and 30 cents, and oats from 40 and 43 cents per bushel to 39 and 40 cents. Turnips are selling for 25 and 30 cents a bushel and 80 cents a barrel. Inac- tivity in the flour market has lessened the price of some grades.—Chronicle.

Escarsp FROM DorcuestER.—Aboat half- past five o'clock on Wednesday m orning, a convict named Roberts made his escape from the penitentiary grounds and has not yet been captured. Under charge of an officer he was attending the cattle in the barns and went out of sight of the former for a few moments. Upon his not returning the officer looked for him, but Mr. Roberts was very mach absent. Roberts was sentenced in St. John about a year ago.

Pecuttak Tactics.—East Boston women, according to late advices, are in constant fear and trembling over the crazy actions of a man which resemble the operations of the White- chapel fiend. He lies in wait in dark places and darts suddenly out after female passers- by, brandishing an ugly-locking knife. He pursued one woman into her hoyse, and was prevented from attacking her only by the timely appearance of men. No less than six other depinn cases are reported, but thus far the fiend has found no victims. The police are on the lookout for the man, but decline to give any details.

Harp Ur—Oneof the Halifax papers, hard up for a “‘ local” bas the following creation of the reporter s lively imagination: ‘ A peculiar- looking man arrived in a schooner from Char- lottetown yesterday. The boys on the Mar- ket wharf called him Eppo. He has hair al! over his body, quite thick and of a dark color, and a face resembling a monkey. His actions are characteristic of those of an insane person, and he barks like a dog. Itis the intention to have him placed in the insane asylum either at Charlottetown or here.

A Narrow Escapz.—The Market House building had a narrow escape from destruc- tion by fire this morning. Shortly after the fires were started the pipe broke down, and the beams between the walls, directly over the old court-room, took fire. Market Clerk Chandler and Janitor VanlIderstine at once set about extinguishing the flames, the last named individual crawling along between the Walls,in defiance of asuffocating smoke, and His hands are somewhat urned as a result of his heroic efforts. Had when it was, we would, without doubt, have hada serious conflagration to chronicle to-day.

that the creation of a peasant propriety was the only means. The Lrish party were always ready and eager to assist in the set- tlement of the land question. Their Oppo- sition to the bill was due to the knowledge that ic would cause a loss to the exchequer without effecting i's ostensible object ob- ject. The Government had not taken up the land question with a view to help- ing tenants, but at the — solicitation of the landlords who, seeing they eould no longer maintain,their position, wanted to dispose of their property at inflated prices. Congested and rack-rented estates would not be touched under the bill. Arrears ought tu be considered along with the rent reduction, otherwise land purchase arrange- ments were futile. The bill would not assist that large pemanent settlement that was desirable. The measure showed the entire absense of consideration for national sentiment. This was not merely an agrarian question, it was knit up with national aspirations. If the Government meant well to the tenants by the bill, he implored to insert suitable provisions dealing with arrears, the ten ants’ great difficulty. That done, he could cordially approve of the measure, and the legislature would reap the reward in con ciliation of the people. (Cheers. )

Lord Randolph Churchill said he trusted that the Government would wind up the arrears question early as the financial op- eration of the bill was certainly good enough. The security for advance was totally insufticient. It would never do to make the state an immediate landlord of [rish tenantry. The bill was not likely to be a danger to the State. though probably it could be safely extended.

reading, 299 to 224.

Fire at St. Stephen, N. B. St. STEPHEN, N. B., Nov. 22.

About half-past three o’clock this morn- ing fire was discovered in the large brick building on Water Street, owned by Gan- ong Bros., and occupied by the firm as a confectionary manufactory. The building iscompletely gutted. Ail the machinery, raanufacturing stock and manufactured goods in a rear building were burned, only ® portion of the goods in the retail store with the books and papers in the vault being saved. The loss is estimated at

about $50,000 ; insurance, $35,000.

News From Halifax.

The new schooner Donald Cann, from P. E. Isiand for Yarmouth, with produce, struck Oldman reef, Tusket Island, and filled. There are hopes of floating her.

Michael McDonald and his two sons, of Whitehaven, Guysboro, were drawned on the Canso fishing grounds to-day. They were out fishing in boacs, with many others, when their boat suddenly swamped.

The warfare between the steam lines running from Halifax to Boston becomes mere bitter every day.

Elistorical and Medical. A correspondent writes: ‘On the 19th September, 1872, a meeting of the medical men of this Province took place at the City Hotel, Charlostetown. Dr. MacKie- Son Was appointed chairman, After routine | business, Dr. Hobkirk was elected Presi- | dent of the Prince Edward Island Medical Society. A committee was ap- pointed to prepare bye-laws. For a time! this Society did good work. A medical | law was passed, but remained in operation ouly five years. The wisdom of our Legis- lators thought five years was long enough to enact a medical law. How different in the other Provinces of Canada— every Pro- vince has a perpetual law regulating the practice of medicine and surgery. This Island has none. It is to be hoped the Legislature this coming winter will pass a, law similar to Nova Scotia, New Bruns- wick and the clher Provinces, so that we shall no longer be considered behind the
