Tur members of No. 1 Garrison Artillery will please take notice that the drill at Fort Edward on Saturday evening next will com. mence at 3.30 o’clock p. m., instead of 2 p. m., as previously announced. A full at- tendance is requested.

Pror. ALLISON regards the abolition of the liquor traffic as the great question of the day. All other issues are, in his opinion, stbsidiary to this. His eloquent address in Y.M.C.A. Hall will be supplemented by another in Reform Club Hall this evening. Every one will be the better of hearing it.

Pumprs Dry.—The pump at the corner of Weymouth and King streets, the pump at the corner of Hillsborough and King streets and the pnmp at the corner of Sydney and Hillsborough streets are dry. In case of fire, when the tide is out, the city in these localities is at the mercy of the flames. Something must be done by the Civic an- thorities.

J. P. McMittan, of Guelph, has re- ceived a letter from Lord Dufferin’s Secre- tary, which states that his Excellency feels extremely honored by the proposal thata deputation of representatives of all Muni- cipal Corporations in Ontario should meet him at Quebec, and present him witha farewell address before his departure from Canada. The letter also stated that his Excellency will inform Mr. MeMillan, at an early date, as to the day he could receive the depuation. /

Moncton has a four months’ old child which is marked in the most extraordinary manner. The hair and skin resemble the skin of a bear. There are forty-two bear marks on the hody. Nothing like it has ever been heard of before, and Moncton is naturally astonished at the curiosity. Its parents’ name is Pulrang. At San Fran- cisco a Nova Scotian couple have a baby which, when two weeks old, could eat soup, mashed potatoes, and other edibles suitable to the digestion of full grown persons. This latter infant phenomenon promises to be remarkable chiefly as a gormandizer.

MISMANAGEMENT. —Passengers who came by rail to the Gathering of the Clans are loud in denounciation of the deception practiced upon them. In the bills it was announced that the trains would ‘‘stop at tie St. Peter’s Road crossing, adjoining the yrounds, for the convenience of visitors. But the trains never stopped until they ar- rived at the station in Charlottetown. Many strangers were, consequently, ob- lived to search for the grounds; and some, we are informed,found them not at all. The Railway Department is also much blaimed for failing te provide a sufficient number of cars. The passengers were, it is said, packed almost as closely as herring ina box; and it is regarded as a purely provi. dental circumstance that there was no serious accident.

Tue examination of candidates for the next term of the Normal School was held on Tuesday and Wediaesday of this week. Over one hundred candidates competed and were examined in reading, writing, arith- metic, geography, history, grammar and composition. RoseBankK Farm, Norru River, August 3, 1878. Drarn Str,—As I was plowing a piece of new land that had lately been cleared, the plow struck against a hard substance which I supposed to be a stone. On examing the place | found what proved to be of much interest te antiquarians. ‘The object seems to be of great antiquity, and bears a slight resemblance to a hollow basin with a very wide rim. Protrud- ing from the side is a handle resembling a ser- pent. On one side is a partially nude figure ofa female in @ sitting posture. It is com- pletely covered with tigures and emblems that 1 could not possibly decipher. The object is a complese puzzle to all who have examined it. "he curious can see it at my residence at any time. Iam about making excavations in the same place, as various indications point to valuable relics in the vicinity. He will perform the detail duties of his appointment under direction of the senior Dominion Inspector of Artillery, with whom he will correspond direct upon those subjects. The Head Quarters of Major Lewes will be at Halifax, Nova Scotia, until further orders.

Tue Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court was this forenoon crowded with spectators, who came impressed with the idea that they would see an overflowing dock. However, only five unfortunates appeared, and there was nothing interesting in their trial. Johy McKenzie, who was arrested for breaking Mr. IT’. O’Connell’s window, declared his willingness to pay for the damage done. He was discharged. Daniel Carroll appeared for assaulting Hector McLean. He was sent up for one month. George Thompson, found drunk on a doorstep on Queen street, was fined $2 and cosis or eight days. The case of Peter Ferguson, arrested for being drunk and disorderly, was adjourned till to-morrow. John Prenty, drunk and in- capable, was fined $3 and costs or 14 days.

A Bye-Law for Levying an Assess- ment on Real Property in the

City of Charlottetown. (Passed by the City Council 19th July, 1878.) \ J HEREAS, it is necessary and expedient

to pass a By-Law for the purpose of levy- ing an Assessment on the rental of Freehold and Leasehold Property in the City of Char- lottetown, for City and School purposes, for the current yearending on the twenty sixth day of May, in the year of our Lord one thou- sand eight hundred and seventy nine, —

Be it therefore enacted by the City Council of the City of Charlottetewn as follows :—

1. There shall be paid by the occupants or owners of Freehold or Leasehold Property within the City of Charlottetown, for City and School purposes, the following sum, that is to say, the sum of Twelve Cents onevery Dollar of the rental for the current year ending on the twenty-sixth day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred seventy nine, according to thé valuations entered against the names of each and every person in the Valuation Book of Real Property made by the Assessors of of the City of Charlottetown, and returned by the said Assessors to the said City Council on the twelfth day of July, in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy-eight.

2. In cases where the occupant named in the Assessment Book of real property, made by the said Assessors of the City of Cherlotte- town, shall have left the premises so assessed before the time of giving the notice of assess- ment required by law, such notice shall be served upon the person or persons actually in possession ; and, if the premises be vacant, then such notice shall served upon the owner or owners thereof, or his or their agent ; and such owner or owners shall be deemed, for the purposes of this law, the occupant or 5 occupants ; and such occupant or occupants, owner or owners in the cases aforesaid, shall be severally liable for the payment of the sum entered against the name of the original occr- pant or occupants in the Assessment Book of Real Property madeup by the said Assessors of the said City, and deposited with the City Clerk, subject to the same right of a as the person or persons originally assessed was or were entitled to.

3. In cases where tenement houses contain- ing two or more occupants, and where either the owner or one occupant was originally as- sessed, the City Collector shall have power and authority to divide and apportion such as-

roportion to their several or respective rents, in order that the notices for assessment may be served on such occupants in due form.

The opening of the new winning at ‘‘ THE SYDNEY MINES” and the fact that the SYDNEY COAL now being shipped is all from the DEEP taken in connection with re cent improvements in the process of screening, affords purchases a positive guarantee of the very superior quality and condition of the SYDNEY COAL now offered for sale.

It is a well-know fact that for many years past the prices of other Cape Breton coals have been regulated by the rates fixed for SYDNEY COAL; but while it is true that other coals, to get a sale at ali, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAL, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior lasting qualities of SYDNEY COAL when compared with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and convenience, is in favor of SYDNEY COAL, even at a much higher price.

The General Mining Assgciation (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ‘‘ EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” “SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” ete., ete., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coalas SYDNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts to sell coal by such means are only so many admissions on the part of those who make them of the STANDARD character of SYDNEY COAL.
