Bompay, June 21.—The riotsin South- ern India have reached serious proportions, and the disturbance has spread as far as Travancore. In dealing with the rioters at thie place the police were overpowered and were severely beaten and forced to retire. The rioters have seized a number of guns and have secured a quantity of | ammupitien, and have now become a'! dangerous force to reckon*with. They are, cutting off the ears of their opponents for ; the sake ef obiaining their earringe with the least trouble, and are burning houees and committing various outrages.

About four hundred and fifty houses have been burned at Sambovadgaria.

Troops have © been calied out and are now patrolling the disturbed districts.

TRAGEDY AT SUMMERSIDE

Four little , the eldest aged 11 and the youngest | 6, were drowned within a mile of,and in sight of their own homes. Five little girls had gone out clam digging. Their names were, Bell May Fraser, Laura, Aggie and Janie Gallant and Daisy Perry. They had wandered along the bars about the shore and before they noticed it the water camein and surrounded them. They all started to try (o wade tothe shore, but only one, Aggie Gallant; sneceeded, and before friends were able to get to ‘the scene the other four periehed. The bar was immediately dragged and at hal/-past ses en three of the bodies were found,

The body of Daisy Perry, six years old, up to one o’clock to-day had not been found. As the catastrophy was so palpab-~ ly an accident, ao inquest will be held.

How General Joubert Would Act in the Event of War.

Lonpoy, June 20..-The St. James Gaz- ette claims to have rsceived from an abso- lutely reliable source at Pretoria, tbe plan of the campaign which wi ! be followed by General Joubert cemmander-in-chief of the Boers, in the event of war between the Transvaal and Great Britain.

General Joubert’s forces wil | consist of | 20,000 men, armed with Maueer rifles, in additio. w 46 gquick- firing gons, and 1,000 artillerymen, ost of them drawn from the Germano and Dutch armies. With these troops and help expected trom the Orenge Free State, Joubert’e expects to take the offensive immediately after the declaration of war, enter the Orange Free State and march on Kimberley, the Bri- tish diamond mining centre in West Gri- gualand which forms four of the seventy divisions of Cape Colony, Kimberley is about 100 miles nerthwest of Bloemfon~ tein. Jn his march on Kimberley,Joubert will have the railroad as far as available and expects to capture the towa with smal! loss, blowing up De Beers Sdiamend mine. Simultaneously, it is added, the railroad from Cape Towh to Buluwayo will be de~ stroyed by Boer sympsthizers end agenis in Cape Clony, who will also destroy the Port Elizabeth-Pretoria line, south of Bloemfontein, to prevent British troops from using it. Immediate: ly after Kimberley is captured, General Joubert will advance on Cape Town, capital of Cape Colony, through weatern provinces, where the dutch predominate and are expected to join the Boers. Jous bert calculates he will be master of Cape Town 4 fortnight efter the declaration of war, and that he will then be able to dic» tate terms of peace.

Orrawa, June 21,—In the House yess terday,two hours discussion took place over the case of Dr. Bethuue.M.P., for Victoria C. B., and now supports the party he wae elects ed to oppose and over the patronage of Victoria.

Dr. Bethune in explaining his change said he went to the other side of the house because he liked it better than the other, and his change was satisfactory to the mejority of the people in the country.

Mr. Bethune observed that the Gov- ernment policy did not differ from the principles he had advocated in his cams paigo. (Upposition) laughter. Sir Char- les Tupper on the close of the discussion observed that he had not supposed it to be a matter of great consequence and be was willing to leave Dr. Bethune to the judg- ment of the electors whom he had bes trayed,

The Fruit Grower's Associatien of On- tario is calling upon the Federai Govera~ ment to adopt regulations for the grading and inspection of apples, and with ihe view of bringing pressure to bear from this Proviuce have asked our Frait vrow- ers’ Association to endorse the following resolution :

To the Honorable Minister of Agr culture, Ouawa,—

Whereas, it is well known that frandu- lent packing of apples for export is avery prevsient evil which is yearly bringing discredit upon the name of our Dominion avd ruining the English market for our Canadian apples.

Whereas, as a matter of fact, Cana- dian apples are the finest im the world, and will bring the very highest prices in the English markets, if confidence in the macking can be sustained,

Whereas, we believe that about eighty~ five per cent of the apples grown ia On- tario that are shipped to Great Britain are purchased, graded, packed and ship-

ped by dealers,and, as itis to their inter- a. as well as the interest of all concerned, that a reliable brand should be estab- lised,

Therefore, Resolved, that thie Associa- tion do humbly pray that you will provide some remedy for the same.

We would suggest that certain marks or numbers be adopted to indicate certain grades and sizes of apples, and that it be made a miedemeanor for anyone to stamp these marks or numbers upon the outside of his packages unless the contents of the

packages are in accordance therewith; that ;

the name and address ef the owner and shipper be always required om either the inside or outside of closed package intesd- ed for export; and that an inspector be appointed with power to open any packages and, if found frauduient to have the grade marks removed, and to expose the offender ;and we ‘further svggest that the terms used for grading be“ No1” and A No Is, No 1 to include sound apples reason~ ably free from worm holes, scabs or other blemishes and to be net less than 2; inches in diameter, and grade A No 1 the came, with apples not less than 2] inches in diameter.

In order to obtain the approval of the Prince Eiward Island Association without calling a meeting, members thereof are requested to authorize the secretary, Mr. Peter McCourt, Charlottetown, by postal card, to attach their names to this resolution aud forward it t> headquarters.
