Town Scnoots.—Last Spring, through the politeness of Mr. Pippy, we were fayoured with a copy of the report of the state of the schools in Woburn, Mass. Although in many respects ably drawn up, yet it does not contain the data which would enable us to institute a fair comparison between the primary schools of Woburn and those of this City. Public examinations have been held during the week of the different female schools under the control of the Board of Education, and also of the boys sehool taught by Mr. Roche. We were unable to witness all of them, but what we did see, we consider highly satisfactory. That first element of success, good discipline, as far as could be judged from one occasion, seems to be duly attended to. The manner of reading of the different classes

Gentlemen—A young lady of my acquaintance had been for a Jong time very much troubled with worms, I advised her to try Dr. M’Lane’s Celebrated Vermifuge, prepared by Fleming Bros., of Pittsburgh, Pa. She accordingly purchased and took one vial, which caused her to discharge an unusual large quantity of worms. She was immediately relieved of all the dreadtul symptoms accompanying this disease, and rapidly recovered her nsual health. The young lady does not wish he name mentioned; her residence, however, is 320 Fifth street, and she

But, sir, it is downright abuse of time for any youag man, who has books and ordivary talent, to sit listening to the generality of these “lectures.” The opening lecture for this season was a per- fect specimea of this effete oratory. The lecture was a warning to young men, and pointing out the temptations to be most guarded against. And what do you think we were first cautioned toavoid? Why,the Theatre. This, sir, puts one in mind of the old woman who sat crying over the well, and when asked what she cried for, answered: “ Oh,” said she, “ if I kad eliildren they'd be in danger of falling into this horrid well.” Next came Drinking; and here we had a bit of temperance oratory: “ Don’t,” said the lecturer, * give your Bank Notes for whiskey.” The words italicised are plainly an allusion to Mr. Coles’s advertisement—they were delivered as such, understood as such, and greeted with some cheering. Now, sir, here is hypocrisy or inconsistency. or both, with a vengeance. These temperance and Christian lecturers can't bear the thought of whiskey—much less of a brewery ; yet, for the paltry price of an advertisement, they point out to the public this “sink of hell”—this “fire of damnation” in capital letters through the columns of the ubiquitous Protector. The language in the Hall is, “don't bay whiskey ;” give ihe editing “ Committee” a few shillings and the language of the Protector is,“ whoever has Bank Notes can get first-rate whiskey for them at Coles’s Brewery.” Uh consistency! Next in order came’ Smoking. The lec- turer deserihed a brat of a boy swaggering along with a cigar in his mouth, and thinking himsebf a man, Conceit in a boy is despicable, but want of judgment in a man is worse. The lecturer might know that some who are men—and that among his hearers—smoke ; and, therefore, his proper course would be to show, on scientific priuveiples, and by statistics and quotations from competent authorities, (if he were able) that tobaeco is injurious. But, uo, “ talk is cheap,” and [ suspect the ability was wanting. Seriously, Mr. Editor, is
