When Howie left the kitchen so sud devly, in order to escape bis mother’s | reproof and Biddy’s wrath, he climbed | the back stars as fast as his plump, little | legs would let him. To his great satis} fuetion, he found the door of the play-| room open. He was not often allowed to | play here alone, for his brother and sisters | had many choice things, and Pet’s ideas of the uses to which they could be applied, did not at all agree with the delicacy of the things. For a moment he stood, his blue eyes very sober and thoughtful, holdieg his hands behicd him, as if trying to keep them out of misehief, while his busy little brain planned what to do duriue the few minutes that would elapse, before some one came in search of him, Sitting daintly in the corner of Emma’s play-house, was a beautiful wax-doll— —Ariana by name—that Howie had never been allowed to hold, except when Emma sat beside him.

Very carefully Howie took Miss Ariana from her place, only knocking over a table with a tioy vase of flowers, in the effort. Dolly had to open and shut her eyes more times during the next five minutes than in all her lite before. How soft and smooth her cheeks looked! Pet rubbed his fingers over them, and then over his own, to see which were smoothest. He had forgotten ali about the little affair with the coal, until he saw a streak of smut clear across the lovely Ariava’s face. Then he looked at his chubby little hands and saw how dirty they were. Now Howie loved Emma dearly, and his next thought was how to make dolly new again. He had heard it said that butter would clean waxdolls. Looking around for help in his perplexity, he noticed that the door opened into Grandma's room stood ajar. It was generally locked.

‘ Wouder if Gamma’s dot any tandy,”’ thought he, as he stood looking around this delightful room, In one side of this room was a recess, which being almost shut ia by the bed, made a cozy nook ell by itselt. Here were Grandma’s rocking- chair, footstool and stand. The latter gave ample proof that Grandma was an invalid, for on it were bottles of camphor, ammonia and eye-water. Ln little tempt~ ing vials were dainty white pellets, and

completed the variety. Howie at once commenced “ fixin’ me’cioe.’’ Toto an empty tumbler he poured camphor, eye~ water and ammosia, The Jatrer made him wiok fast, but be was brave. With this mixture, he remedicated the pellets marked ‘“ Spongias.”’

Just then he heard Emma's quick step approzebiag. He coulda’t think of being interfeted with in the midst ot so much happinéss. Seeing that the clothes of the unmade bed tell in heavy drapery over the foot, he scrambled under them. When Emwa went through the room, calling ‘‘ Howie, Howie,’’ be only shut his lips verpitight and kept very still. Crawling out as the fuotsteps died away, he found the abused Ariana, and the thought occurr- ed to him that the white eye-salve he had found on the stand, would be as good for cleaning purposes as butter. He at once proceeded to apply it with his smutty fingers, producing a frightful change in the face of the beautiful dolly. Then he heard grandma’s slow steps, aod in a jiffy he was in his hiding-placeagain, She just peeped behind the bed, but failed to notice the toe of a dainty boot and bit of Lright plaid dress that would have revealed somebody’s hiding-place.

Se Howie was soon left alone again. Poor Agjana, having been pluoged under the bed tace dowuwards, had collected a quantity of dust on her greasy face, aod was thrown aside, a hopeless case. In the staud drawer, Howie tuund some peppers mists and candy, which of course were made to eat, aud which were at once ap- plied to their destined purposes, While hands and mouth were full, his father’s step was heard.

“ Wis’ folks wouldn’t bozzer so, thought Pet in his retreat. He was soon alone agiin. He now begin to tire of the recess, and went across the room to the wash-stand, where he found another little drawer to examine.

When Mr. Lee returned with auxious face from his search through the gardeu and house, Mrs. Lee whispered with white lips her suspicions. With evident effort at composure, the father said, * Let us make
