The Damning Bowl.

Che wine cap hath a witching power, And woos like woman’s rosy lips ; But, ab! it wins but to devour rhe victim that its sweetness sips.

Unlike the rosy lips of love, It will a pang of woe impart ; Oh! ves, the wine cup can bulprove \ Upas poison to the heart! More fatal than the serpent’s fang, [bat o’er Eden's cradeled bliss, It poisons peace with many @ pang, And kills you with a flatterers kiss, It blasts afloctions fairest flowers, While vice o'er virtue hold’s a spell; It drowns the soul’s exalted powers, Aud makes the bappiest heart a hell.

Oh! dash to earth the damning bowl, Kre reason flies her rvined throne ;

Genivs, beware! ere thy proud soul, Shall be eternally undone :

‘Tis fatal to the child of fame, By all the noblest gitts refined ;

It sinks him down to sin and shame, And murders the immortal mind,

How many wrecks the tide of life,

Is bearing with a blested name? Behold the broken-hearted wife

And mother, mourning o’er.the shame ! Upon a gloomy tide of tears,

Have zone the hopes they could not

Gone, too, the joys of younger years,

All garnered in a drunkards grave,

Bismarck on Eloquence.

Bismarck is no orater. His speech is simple and plais. He thinks that the giit of eloquence has done a _ great deal of mischief in parliamentary life. lt tries by appealing to the feelings to settle questions which should be settied by common sense,

When the Federal Council began its work,a few the members made eloquent speeches.

“Gentlemen,” said Bismarak, ‘‘there is nothing to be achieved here by elo- quence,beeause every one of you brings

Herr Lasker, whose death in this country was the oceasion of a little unpleasantness, once delivered an_ elo- quent speech in the reichstag. ‘These eloquent gentlemen,” said Bismarck, commenting on the specch, “are like a good many ladies with small fest, who always wear shoes too small for them, and stick out their feet to be looked at. When « man has the misfortune to be eloquent, he makes speeches too often and too long.”

On another occasion, Radowitz, a great orator,made a speech in the North German Parliament, which so swayed the members that they were ready to vote as he had urged them,to. One of Bismarck’s colieagues, sitting near him, was strongly moved by the eloquence, and he shed tears.

“What are you crying about ?” coolly asked Bismarck.

“You are heartless, answered the colleague, indiguantly. The next day, when a copy of the printed speech was placed in Bismarck’s hand, he handed it to the same gentleman, saying : —

‘Please point out to me the part of the speech [ out to have cried over yesterday, if I had possessed such a thing as a heart.”

The gentleman had looked it over, and then said :—‘“‘I don’t know how it is, but the speech does not make the same impression upon me in print.’ The orator’s voice, expression of face, and his magnetic personality had carried the colleague away,

Bismarck used to tell a bumorous story to illustrate the distracting effect of eloquence. Frederick William I.,the despotic king who publicly whipped his son, subsequently Frederick the Great, once listened to the pleadings of two lawyers. After the first one had finished his speech the king, moved by the advo- cate’s eloquence, exclaimed :

“This fellowisin the right!’ The second lawyer then spoke and with such efiee| thatthe king said: ‘This man has the right of it !”

Then recalling that he had contra- dicted biteself, he fell into a furious passion vv i sent both orators to prison.
