There was a modest showing at Baba’s Lounge on Oct. 14, but that didn’t stop Matthew de Zoete.

The talented singer/song- writer from Hamilton, Ont. was in Charlottetown as part of his three week East- ern Canada tour for a show to promote his new record “Bottom of the World” with bassist Paul VanDyk hitting the low notes by his side.

entirely his own, featuring unique vocals and_intelli- gently written lyrics. “Bottom of the World” ex- plores the realms of love and family, and sounds as real as a record can get. The songs go above and beyond the flash and dance that many have come to expect from emerging artists, as de Zoete proves honesty can prevail in the modern music scene. His live performance was not one to be missed. He seemed to pull in each audi- ence member into a sort of trance that not just any artist has the ability to do, but de Zoete pulls it off with gener-

al ease. He owned every inch of the cramped Baba’s stage, ignoring the fact he didn’t have a lot of space to work with to pull off a one-of-a- kind show that is not soon going to be forgotten.

Island _ singer/songwriter Meaghan Blanchard, the opening act for de Zoete, also displayed her own unique brand of music, pleasing the crowd and displaying the type of sound Island music lovers have come to expect from this young, talented musician. Singing about love and anything that inspires her, she’s an Island artist you want to find in your music collection.
