NOVEMBER 19, 2004 UPEI Women Reach CIS Playoffs, Coach Redmond Reaches Podium

The women’s Panthers eked out a tie yesterday at the nationals against the Trinity Western Spartans in a defensive battle that was eventually ended after shootouts. The rules of the tournament state that in round robin play, a shootout is not to determine the winner, but to be used asa tie-breaking procedure before entering elimination play. The score in the shootout was 5- 4in Trinity’s favour.

Leslie Bradshaw, UPEI’s goal- keeper, kept up her stellar play by deflecting ten shots for the shutout. The Panthers only mustered five of their own, and were stymied on every attempt by the Trinity keeper, Angela Garriott. Garriot’s stops included those ontwo penalty kicks by Amy Connolly within two minutes of each other in the first half. UPEI’s Janelle Blanchard received player of the game recognition for her hard work in the match.

who won the game 1-0 ona goal which squeaked by with three minutes remaining. It would prove to be the winner. UPEI Panther Amy Connolly garnered the Adidas’ Player of the Game award.

Meanwhile, UPEI coach Mike Redmond scored a personal victory on Wednesday by being named the CIS Coach of the Year. Redmond led the women to a 10-1-2 record and first place finish only one year after they had ended with a record of 3-5-5. Improvements were vast both on behalf of the girls and Redmond, and they eventually emerged as the regions top team and are competing in the nationals in Montreal.

Redmond was only the 3” Atlantic coach to receive the honour in

This week in the NFL, there are several games that should be close and tough to pick. Minnesota is on the road to take on the Green Bay Packers. With Randy Moss listed as doubtful for the game witha strained hamstring, and with Brett Faire’s inconsistent play this season, the outcome could go either way. Green Bay has been poor at home this season but they have won their last three games. Look for Green Bay to outplay and outscore the mighty Vikings 30-17.

With Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers being unbeliev- able as of late, knocking off two undefeated teams in a row, watch out for an upset when they visit the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland has been very unpredictable this season with former CF Ler Jeff Garcia in the quarterback position. I know this is a long shot but I predict a very close game with Cleveland barely winning it 23-20.

Another game that will be a great one to watch is Seattle at St. Louis. Seattle is the slight favourite in this game with two somewhat evenly matched teams. Seattle has been 3-2 on the road and St. Louis has been 2-2 at home. St. Louis and Seattle are ranked 6" and 7" respectively in offense but Seattle has a much better defence. Seattle to win on the road 34- 13.

Baltimore are visiting the New York Jets on Sunday. Now that New York has former Edmonton Eskimo QB Ricky Ray as third-string.....look out. New York is the slim favourite and undefeated at home this year. New York should have an easy time with the Ravens and take it 20-10.

Standing at 6’7", rookie forward Engen Nurumbi from Kinshasa, Africa, is proving to be a big success early on in the season. “Bob”, his nickname coined due to the inability of most people to pronounce his name correctly, has been scoring ata fast and furious pace, leading the way for the Panthers to have a stellar pre-season thus far. With unbelievable leaping ability and fantastic athletic prowess, many believe he is in strong contention for rookie of the year, even before the season has begun. With UPEI having 5 rookies on the 13 man team this year, the team will be looking for Nurumbi to step up his game and try to carry his preseason numbers (22-11 against Lakehead, 11 points vs Acadia) into the regular season, where it looks like they will be missing veteran forward Peter Stay and all-star guard Tyler Wood. Nowis the time to shine for this first year phenom, ashe will try to prove his worth in their first regular season game at Memorial University, 8 pmon Saturday.
