St. Julien has arrived at Rochester, and will endeavor to beat her time if he can. As the Rochester track is one of tho fastest in the United States, St. Julien is perhaps as likely to aecomplish the feat he is about to under- take, there, as any where.

I. 0. O. F.—The delegates to the R. W. Grand Lodge, which opens at Wolfville, N.S., on Wednesday next, left by steamer this morning. The following are the names: St. Lawrence Lodge--Theo. L. CHARLES BRADLAUGH, armed with a stout oak stick, attempted to force an entrance into the Imperial House of Commons on the 3rd, and was ejected by the police and ushers, after a hot strugele. He stated be would renew the attempt with force sufficient to compel an entrance. It is said that Brad- laugh will apply for a summons against the Deputy Speaker, the police, and others, for assault in resisting his entrance.

A Frencu-CanyadiaN named Marcelle was arrested a few days ago at Stanbridge, Que., station, charged with the murder of one Orris, a companion with whom. he had been out fishing. The dead body of Orris was found attached te the fishing line of the accused, and bearing unmistakable marks of violence. Under the circumstances, it is not surprising that a coroner’s jury re- turned a verdict of murder against Marcelle.

Germany has nearly 400,000 shoemakers and cobblers, or nearly 90 to every 10,000 of her pepulation. This is a larger proportion than in auy country except Italy and Eng- land. Italy takesthe lead ofall. Then come, in the order named, England and Wales, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark, France, the United States and Sweden. it is a curi- ous circumstarce that warm Italy should have within a fraction of 100 cobblers to 10,- 000 of the population, and celd Sweden less than 18,

The Canada Temperance Act.

Tue case of Mr. Stephen Carroll, charged with violating the Canada Temperance Act, was tried at the Stipendi- ary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon. Mr. Hodgson, Q. C., appeared for the prosecu- tion, and Mr. Davies,Q. C., for the defence. The violation of the act was proven by a witness—Owen McMahon— who testified that on Friday last he bought a pint of brandy from the defendant, andé for it paid fifty cents. The defence mude by Mr. Davies was (1) that the list of voters used by the Sheriff «at the election for the adoption of the Act in this city was the list of voters for Charlottetown Common an? Roy dty—that being the case the election was ilicyal, aud (2). That the Canada Tempers:.ee Act was wlira wires. The first oljection as far as the list used is concerned, was admitted by Mr. Hodgson, but that they were illeally used he deaied. He cotended that it was not the time when the Act came inte force te raise sifth objec- tion; the proper time was after the election had been held. ‘hey should then demand a scrutiny of the vetes, and if possible have the act set dside. He contended that the ob- jection raised by the defence would amount to nothing. Even if all the votes pelled by electors from the royalty were cancelled, there would still be a large majority in favor of the Act in the city. He had nv doubt as to the Act being in full force in

being in force in the royalty. -Mr. Davies pursued a very different line of argument te that of Mr. Hodgson. He argued that the election for the adoption of the Act was illegal from the fact that the returning offi- cer had used an illegal list of voters and recorded votes in favor of the Act which were not qualified. Mr. Davies raised the same objections to the legality of the Canada Temperance Act as those raised during the trial ef the test case in Fred- ericton, New Brunswiek. The Magistrate reserved his decision and the court ad- jJeurned at noon.

GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND. Lonpon, Aug. 5.

The Land Bill was resumed in the Lords to-day and the clauses up to 11 have been adopted. The bill was passed through com. mittee, after various important amend. ments had been adopted, the committee reported and the third reading ef the bill has been fixed for Monday.

All the clauses up to 57 inclusive, were disposed of and the bill passed through cem- raittee.

It is stated that a deputation ef promin- ent Conservatives will go to Ireland to in- quire into and report. upon the relative condition of the laborers living respectively under, and working for, resident and nen- resident landlords and farmers. The object is to form a basis, by its report, for legisla. tion upon the labor question.

The Daily News says in view of the avowed determination of the few Parnell- i.es to obstruct the business of the Com- mons, the view of the Opposition has been ascertained in regard to an urgency for supply. The result of inquiry encourages the -Government to believe that if this step is necessary the Oppesitien will cerdi- ally act.

The following official changes in the Cab- inet are announced: Lord Roseberry has been appeinted Under Secretary for the Home Office, vice Ceurtney, who has been appointed Under Secretary for the Col- onies, vice Rt. Hon. M. E. Grant Duff, who has been appointed Governer of Ma dras.

The Times Cork despatch says: The laborers’ strike ‘s everywhere extending. At Queenstown, Mallew, and at different centres of labor, men have joined the movement. The strike has merged into a general agitation for wages. The employ- ers, with a few exceptions, are resisting the demands.

The Russian court made a recent journey to Moscow because of the discevery ef an extensive conspiracy to assassinate the Im- perial family. Sixty persons, some ef them of high rank, are involved in the plot.

San Franctsco, Aug. 5.

A despatch from Grass Valley says the First Artillery Battalion, N. G. C., in camp there, had a sham battle. In the bayenet charge to a fort the militia became exeited, and befere the struggle was ever several commissioned officers and between twenty and thirty men were more or less wounded by bayonets, powder and butts of guns, none seriously, however.

The secret conclave of [rishmen contin- ued in session to-day and additional facts have leaked ont concerning its objects. There are present John Warren, of Lowell, Mass., friend of Ben Butler; Thos. C. Quinn, of Peoria; Geo. J. West, Previdence, a lawyer, and secretary ef ene braneh of the Land League; Rev. Fr. Geo. C. Beals, St. Louis; Geo. C. Cunningham, New Haven; and many other well known agita- tors. It transpires that these men are the ‘*dynamite crowd,” that their delibera- tions are not as to whether dynamite shall be used against England, but ag to the most feasible way of using it.
