Island Delegates Returning.

Ortrawa, March 22.—The whole afier noon of yesterday was taken up in adebate on the motion for a reference of Mr. Bruneau’s resignation to the coin mittce of privileges and elections.

Sir Wilfrid Laurier refused to grant a ecmmittee to investigate the facts.

The P. E Island Government delegates who bave been here pressing the Island’s financial claims and other questions upon the government expect (0 return home today.

They presented a written memorial on the financial clyime asking that they be referred to arbitration.

The questions at issue were discussed and were promised full consideration by the government.

During tue false siarm at Hudifort,s Jast evening, shot was fired from anunknown quarter and the whole Brigade stcod with arms at fixed bayonets. In pitch dark a highlander rushing to his plage was impaled on a comrade’s bayonet.

Lord Dufferin s Reminiseences of Canada,

Lord Dufferin presided, afew evenings ago, at an interesting lantern lecture on “Pictur. esque Cauada,” bgSir H. Cunningham, in London. The chairman said that in listening to the lecturer both Lady Deffer- in and himeelf seemed to live the period of their stay in Canada over again. Each scene was connected with some egreeable memory in their recollections, and again filled their hearts with the most lively enthusiasm for the noble people who in- habited Canada. When they started for the colony they fell very quickly into a gale of wind, und he was lying in his berth, when two strange men dressed in long miver’s boots aud red shirts came at midgight to the side of his cot, and asked him if hewas the Governor-General, He replied that he was, upon which they said, ‘*‘We then call upon you to order the captain immediately to put into port.” They thought the ship was ‘nthe most imminent danger. He replied that they bad better return to their berths, other- wise the captain would put them and bim into irons,

COURTING AFTER THE GALE.

After the gale there came a calm, and it was always the case in those liners that a good deal of courting took place. On board a young cauple announced that they desired to be married by the captain. Lady Dufferin held the bridal gown, his daughter acted ua bridesmaid, and the captain performed the ceremony for o guerdon he need not mention. The whole business was entirely illegal, and he was very giad to hear that immediately on their arrival the eeremony was again per- formed ina more orthodox fashion.

Several incidents of a similar nature came to hie knowledge during bis stay in the country.

THRE LADY AND THE MISSIONARY.

A missionary lived on tue shores of Hudson Bay, where he ministered to the Indians. Finding his solitary life unbear able, he wrote home to bis friends to send him a wife. A lady volunteered, and she arrived by the one vessel that made the voyage and returned afzer the stay ofa fortnight. But whether the sight of the missionary walking impatiently up and down the beach caused her misgivings ~ (laughter)~or for some other reasow, the lady repented of her determination and would not leave the ship. She informed the captain that she would return with him. The missionary tried to get the captain upon hia side, and the captain in- formed the lady shortly afterwards that it would be his dutr to fumigate the ship. (Loud laughter.) Under the circuns stances ahe was forced to land, the mis- sonary himself performed the ceremony of marriage—(laughter)—and they lived happily ever after. (Loud laughter.)

LORD AND LADY DUFFERIN IN A WIGWAM.

Lady Dufferin and he lived for two months in an Indian wigwam. They found it very comfortable, except when they had to stand up to dress, for the up- per-part of the tent was filled with smoke from the fire that burned in tha centre. Having described the Indian marriage custome, one of which enjoined tie young suiter not to encounter the eyes of his father~in-law, the chairman described a great tree which he saw cut down, and which measured 220 teet. He had the rings counted, and it was seen that the plant must have been born in the reign of Edward IV.
