Suiprpine was very lively in Halifax on Saturday last. On that day three steamers, one barque, one barquentine, three brigantines and seventy schooners sailed from that port, and three steamers, one barque, three brigan- tines and twenty-one schooners arrived.

Miss Susan Kina, of Halifax, recently saw the following advertisement in a country newspaper:—‘‘How to get rich—A rare secret -—Send twenty-five cents to George Fullerton, box 413, Portland, Me.” Prompted by curiosity, she forwarded the money and re- ceived the following reply:—‘‘Work night and day and never spend a cent.”

A sHocKING accident occurred in the yard of the Intercolonial Railway at Moncton on Tuesday morning. A man named Robert Currie who was working on a shifting engine in the yard, while pulling a pin from a car, caught his foot between two rails, and the car quickly threw him down and ran over his leg and head. The unfortunate man lived only about 10 or 15 minutes after the accident. —

Losster Factrorres 1x P. E. 1.—From Beach Point to White Sands there are five lobster factories, one of them owned by Mr. M. McFayden, who shipped last season 5,750 cases containing 276,000 cans. In addition to this Mr. McFayded eqported 2,000 qtls. hake, 1,000 qtls. codtish, $5,000 worth hake sounds, 20,000 bushels potatoes, and 3,000 bushels oats. Mr. Charles I. Lachern is erecting a lobster factory at Guernsey Gove. So says the correspondent of the Halifax //erald.

Tue United States Government experiences as much difficulty in obtaining claimants for the balance of the money paid by Great Britain under the Geneva award as did Diogenes in finding an honest man. A bill has been framed to devise measures for a further division of the spoils, and it will come up in Con on Tuesday next. This bill provides that all persons and corporations claiming a share of the award shall sue for the same in the Court of Claims at any time within one year from the passage of the statute. With commendable generosity the Govern- ment promises to allow interest on the claims after proof is admitted. Nine million dollars of British money still remain in the treasury awaiting distribution, and American ingenuity will have departed if there is any ack of plausible claims,

on the Appraiser’s Warehouse and CGauger’s office, on Water Street, last night, The vicinity in which the warehouse is situated is one of the most public in the city, and the modus operandi of the burglars was evidently so noisy that their escape reflects great discredit on the police. The operations were com- menuced by breaking a large pane of glass in the Appraiser’s warehouse on \Water Street, through which one of the gang entered the room. He found nothing there which would be useful to the party; and, quitting the warehouse, they began operations on the rear door of Gauger’s office. With the aid of a heavy birch log they burst open the door— which was well fastened with a heavy iron bar. They then ransacked every desk and drawer in the place, and on leaving car- ried with them one Sykes hydrometer and one

yrometer—the — articles of the kind Mr. Tester, the gauger, had in his possession. They also took one bottle and one flask of alcohol. Leaving the office they visited Mr. DeBlois’ rear cellar hatch, With considerable diffi- culty they raised a temporary hatch, which covered the main one, Finding the main hatch burglar-proof, they dug a hole and made an unsuccessful attempt to lift up the hatch, frame and all. Here they were evidently dis- turbed and quit the premises. The only clew found was a small blacksmith’s shovel, which the thieves left in the gauger’s office. The fellow who entered the appraiser's warehouse must have been badly cut, as the sash of the window was covered with blood.
