A Ghostly Purchase.

Mrs. JONES making some purchases one day recently, and among other things bought a match-safe, which could be seen in the gloom of the darkest night, the manufacturers announced. It represented a face with open eyes and looked simply like a china mask in the broad light of day. Mrs. Jones took it home, hung it upon the wall at the foot of the bed and forgot all about it. That night Jones came home late : he had been kept out en busi ness by a customer who wanted his goods in voiced, and he had told Maria not to sit up for him. About midnight he came in, remarked with chattering teeth thatit was turning cold, or he had the ague, turned down the light which had been left burning for him, and jumped into bed. The next moment he would have been snoring, but he hsppened to open his eyes, and he sat up in bed with one terrific whoop of “Good Lord” “Are you saying your prayers Jeptha?” asked Mrs Jones, sleepily : “ you needn't be soemphatic —Oh h-h-h gra-ci-ous good-ness!” “it’s a ghost |” she screamed as her eyes opened on the ghostly face at the fcot of the bed.

Never did two people make such a time getting ont of any place as they did in vacating that room. Then they sat down on the top of the siairs to consult on the next course of preceedure.

“It was the ghest of my father,” said Jones, shaking like a leaf. ‘‘I recognized the features instantly. Oh, Maria, what can it mean? It must be some awful warning. I—I don’t feel weil Maria; I—I really don't.”

At this moment Bridget the valiant appeared.

“Did liver hear the Joikes of this schramin?” she exclaimed, as she groped her way with a ker- osene lamp. ‘‘Phat’s got yees now?”

They told Bridget as well as they could, and that female answered composedly :

“The evil one will fly away wid yees yet ; if it’s a chost me own two eyes wad like to see it,” and sue marched into the bedroom, gave a wild yell, and came out in triumph with the illaminated match-ssfe in her hand; Mrs Jones laughed hysterically, but Jones was downright mad,

“ Women are such fools,” he exclaimed savag2- ly; “‘bought the thing herself and hung it up, and then toc’ it for a ghost; I'm thankful I’m not & Woman.”

To Callers on the Sick.

Only call at the door unless you are sure your friend is able to see you.

Enter and leave the house and move about the room quietly.

If your frieud is very sick do not fall into gay and careless talk in the attempt to be cheerful.

Do not ask questions, and thus oblige your friend to talk.

Taik about something outside and not about the disease and circumstance of the patient.

Tell the news, but not the list of the sick and dying.

If possible, carry something with you to please the eye and relieve the monotony of the sick room; a flower ora picture, which you can loan for a few days.

If desirable. some little delicacy to tempt the appetite will be well bestowed ; but nothing could be a more complete illustration of mistaken kind- ness than the common custom of tempting sick persons to eat rich cakes, preserves, sweetmeats, etc.

A Bad Cold.

Mrs Colonel Perey Yergerafashionable Austin lady, is affiicted with partial deafness, and just now she is also struggling with the prevailing ir- flueaza, so called, because the sufferer cannot pre- vail upon it to leave. Mrs Colonel Percy Yerger also wrestles with an infant about six-months- old.

There was a socisl gathering at the Yerger mansion not long ago, on which occasion Colonel Highfiger asked how the baby was coming on. The partially deaf lady must have had the baby running in her head, as well as the cold, for when Colonel Highflyer asked her how the cherub was coming on, she repliod with animation, evidently having the cold in her bead.
