Buildings. —This mooth effers the most favorable time usually for the painting and repair of farm buildings, and putting them in order for the Wins ter. A great part of this work may be we)l dene during this month by the farme and his boys.

Implements, pat away for the winter, should be painted or protected in some way from the action of the air and moisture. Paint or varnish for the weod~ work, and a varnish ef twesthirds rosin and ovesthird mutton tallow is excellent for protecting iron and steel,

Live Stock—A little extra feed brings cattle and horses to the begin- ning of winter in good order. The tops ef carrots, beets. and turnips may be fed to good advantage, and there is a great eal of sweetness in the October pasturage. Where much corn is plant- ed‘ there will always be soft ears and ‘nubbins’” which are best fed to horses and pigs.

Swine.—Pigs will fatten nearly as fast on potatoes this month as on corn next. They do best on cooked feed, and the grain ought to be greund.

Shecp.—This month we speak for March lambs. Half>fed sheep are often run into market frem sections where fead is searce, and it pays well te se- cure such to feed for the winter, turns ing them off fat in the spring. The feeder should be satisfied if, by so doing, he works up his wheat straw end corn into manure, getting pay for his grain and cash outlay, and that. only.

A Pot of English Ivy makes one of the most agreeable and cheap ornae ments for the sitting-roem in the win- ter, A common four, or five-inch pet with a strong plant can be bought of the florist for tifty cents or less. It is easy to make a basket of interlacing coarse wires to hold the plant.

Entertaining Company.—The whole philosophy of hospitality is summoned up by Emerson in the following: ‘1 pray you, O exeellent wile, not to cum- ber yourself and me to get a rich din- ner for this man er this woman, who has alighted at our geste, nor a bed~ chamber made ready at te great a cost. These things, if they ars curious in, they can get for a dollar at the village. But let this stranger see, if he will, in your looks, in your accent and behavior, your heart and earnestness, your thought and wiil, what be cannet buy at any price, atany village or city, and which he may well travei fifty miles and <diine sparingly and sleep hard, in erder to behold. Certainly let the board be spread and the bed be dressed for the traveller but let not the emphasis of hospitality bein these things.
