During the trial of a case at Osgood hall, Mr. Mc- Carthy was examining Peter Ryan, regard- ing the C. S. Herbert estate. The witness described the businese, hefore the failure, as being in a moribund state; in fact, there was very little, if any, life in it. “What do you meas by that ?” asked the counsel. “What ground have you for saying it was moribund? Give me an illustration,” he demanded. “Well,” dryly answered Mr. Ryan, “I would refer to the thisd party as an illustration,” whereat jadge abd cobnse! and auditors enjoyed that rare and much welcomed event—a court room laugh.
Cueese Storex.—-Some time ago four cheese were stolen from the factory at Montague, and there was no clue to the thief. Police-detective Bradley worked on the case for some time, but did not male any arrests. Then, at the i Professor Robertson, Mr. D. O’Leary, Dominion detective, was derpatched to the scene and bas been working on the case for upwards ofa week. So far, however, he has obtained no definite clue, although several houses have been searched and other efforts made to find the goods. The cheese stolen were valued at $25. It is pieasing to notice the energy displayed in connecticn with the :e-overy of the miss- ing goods. Although the amount involved ia cow paratively trifling the patrons will pot be allowed to suffer any loss. It is to be hoped that the ,u !ty person will be
