The Newfoundland schooner Reason has been missing since Augast 15th, and is given up for lost, witha crew of ten men. The captain is reported to have said before sailing that the vessel was unseaworthy and not fit to go on the bavks. She was fully insured.

A DESPERATE ATTEMPT
To Wreck a Train at Moncton
Moncton, Oct. 14.
A desperate attempt was made last night to wreck the early morning train to Str. Juobn. A railway tie and a large deal were placed across the track juet above the station, but fortunately no serious damage was done. As the train passed the station severa! shots were fired at the cars, one shot entering the station building and lodging in the wall just above the -elegraph operator's head. Henry Campbell, who was some years ago in the lunatic asylum, was arrested on suspicion anc brought to Moncten.
An Embezzler Arrested.
Boston, Oct. 14.
John F. Steadman, cf St. John, was arrested here yesterday. He was manager of the Intercoloniai Railway Cattle Yard at St. Johr, and he is charged with the em- bezziement of $370 He was brought before the United States District Court on the question of extradition, The hearing was postponed to Oct. 28. Bail fixed at $1000.

The British board of trade returns show that exports to Canada increased one per cent. in the nine months ended September, and the imports from Canada increased six teen per cent. Butter increased $125,000, cheese, $145,000, wood nearly five million dollars.

NriaGaRA Fatts, Ont., Oct. 12.—Clifford Calveriy, aged 22, galvanized iron worker, of Clarksburg, Out., but more recently of Toronto, crossed Niagara River to-day on three inch wire cable, whic was 900 feet long. His time yn crossing was only six minutes, eight secon 1s, best previous time being the late Pho:ographer Dixon’s, which was 12 minutes,. 30 seconds. Calverly fairly ran over the wire, with the exception of the middle portion which, owing to oscillation, bad toe be traversed more cautiously. The wire was 250 feet above the terrible rapids. Afterwards, at each end of the wire,dje performed marvellous and dariog tricks} sitting, lying, dancing and rupning backwarés on the wire aud hanging toit with his toes. His daring and skill exceed those of all his prede- cessors and stsmp him as the greatest tight rope performer in the work. He never walked a rope till four mcuths ago,
