The superstition that the glass snake breaks in pieces at a sudden alarm and re- unites its various parts after the danger is over arises from the fact that when threat- ened with attack by a bird or animal this snake throws off its tail, which wiggles about on the ground and distracts the at- tention of the enemy while the snake makes its escape.
