Red Shirts fall Prey , to Panthers

Last weekend, the U.P.E.I. Panthers hosted the U.N.B. Red- shirts for two soccer games: one on Saturday during wind, rain, hail and then snow; and the other on Sunday under much more favourable conditions. On Satur- day, Richard Pierre-Gilles scored the only goal of the game to give the Soccer Panthers a 1-0 win over the U.N.B. team. On Sunday,'the teams played hard, but the contest ended in a 0-0 tie.

On Monday, the Alumni Soccer Panthers battled with the present team. Although they had a lot going for them, the Alumni fell prey to the young panther team. This historic game, the first time alumni played the present panthers, was a very close 3-2.

Not only did Richard Pierre— Gilles score Saturday’s goal, but he scored three goals the game

before. This makes him even with -

David Foley of UNB each of who has seven goals.

Unfortunately, during the se- cond half of Sunday’s game, UPEI player Glen Smiley left the game with a muscle tear. Smiley is a midfielder on the UPEl team. Our hope is that Smiley will be back playing by the time this article reaches the stands.

During the spectacular Alumni game, Pierre-Gilles scored two goals, while Andy Cameron per- formed the other. On the Alumni side of the game, the first goal came from Wilson during a penalty kick. The second goal also came during a penalty kick and was scored by Bill MacLean.

All in all, the three games were handled exceptionally well by the soccer panthers.
