THE recent grounding of the Anchor Line steamer “‘City of Rome,” in the main channel of New York Harbor, while going out to sea, has created some alarm over the loss of ocean steamship trade through neglect to prevent the dumping of garbage in the channel, which bas been going on for years practically unre- strained by the civic authorities.

An Otp Roap.—Nova Scotia enjoys the honor of having the first railroad constructed in America, the oldest working locomotive and the oldest driver in the world. These three telics of the past, all still in working order, are employed at the Albion Mines to convey coal from Stellarton to Pictou Landing. The locomotive, a six-wheeled engine named the “Samson,” was sent on to the Chicago rail- Way exhibition in charge of its old driver, Mr. George Davidson, who assisted in its construc- tion and cime out to this country with it in 1838, He and his engine have been in active service for forty-five years, and both are far from past service yet. The Chicago /nter- Ocean devotes a large part of a column to the engine, driver and railway, and gives a de- scription of the opening of this, the first rail- toad in North America. —N. @. The village of Valloires, in the depart- ment of Savery, has been destroyed by fire. The inhabitants barely escaped with their lives, All live stock in the place, including one hundred head of oxen, per- ished.

The sentences of the three other Nihil- ists condemned to death have been com- muted to imprisonment for an indefinite period, and the sentences to imprisonment of five more have been reduced to various periods.

A cyclone passed over Long Island on Wednesday afternoon, mainly on Home- stead Plains, causing sad havoc among buildings. Rain fell in torrents and the lightning was fierce, shattering many trees, Several persons were prostrated and serious- ly injared, but no fatalities are reported.

The recent action of Germany respecting the May laws and ecclesiastical legislation, has oceasioned much difference of opinion at the Vatican, and there is a growing ten- dency in the highest quarters in favor of accepting the concessions offered by Ger- many, and of not destroying the intended legistation.

On Wednesday last, John Bright was tendered a complimentary banquet in the town hall at Birmingham gt which were as- sembled many distinguished gentlemen. Lord Granville in proposing the health of Mr. Bright referred to the eminent services of that gentleman on various public ques- tions and said in reference to Mr. Bright’s remarks concerning America. In the official position which | hold | am peculiar- ly alive to the very kind and fit langnage expressed by Mr. Bright and others as to the friendly character of the United States, and in promotion of the excellent relations which, without doubt more now than at any time, exist between native born American and English people.

In respect to the report published on Wednesday in New York that a malignant type of yellow fever prevailed in Vera Cruz and that large numbers are dying, it may be stated that the fever which prevails there is calenture. This is a local fever and is not akin to yellow fever. It is however unusvally severe this year. The local authorities have always prevented publication of the number of deaths oc- curring here so that the figures on that point cannot be given. The death rate at Vera Cruz is generally highly attributed to the fatal effects of this disease among un- acclimated troops stationed here. In 1881 and in 1882 fully 75 per cent of the deaths in that city were among the troops. The Mexican telegraph company has 33 em- ployes stationed here, all foreigners, only one of whora has had the fever this season and he is now convalescent and ready for duty. '
