Dear Sim,—{n a short correspondence published in your paper a few days ago [ sevidently hit too hard for the editor of the obscure city paper, for, in yesterday's issue, he flios into a rage and—in the style of a street urchin when worsted in a fight—com- mences calling names. He, last week, in a modest way, attempted to ‘‘ puff” himself; but having been detected and «xposed, he now tries, by a deliberate falsehood, to prejudice THs Examiner in connnection with the St. Peter's Tea Party. This truthful editor savs that Taz Examiner ‘*conld not find space for even a stickful about the Jaying of the corner stone at St. Peters.” When this was penned’ it must have been known te be alie. Why, Mr. Kditor, you published what would be con- sidered a very good account of that success- ful affair; and, better still, it went to the country the day after the ceremony took place. Mrs. Garfield’s Influence.

A Boston paper remurks that Mrs. Garfield’s influence over the President in sustaining his courage can never be over- estimated. A man with boundless pluck who is forced to lie helpless and suffer- ing from a serious wound and all its dangerous complications for days and weeks and montha, will have his hours of depression becuse he is human and there is a timit to the endurance of man, At one time there seemed to be uo hope.

Then it was that Mrs. Garfield came to the front. The fact that medical science seemed to be

clearly and hopelessly beaten had vo effect upon her nerve or courage. The brave little woman would not give up the fight. Her ins.ucible, inexhaus- tible pluck was shown in her reply to the doctors who were commissioned to inform her that the worst was about to happen: ‘Gentlemen, you shall not give him up. Ele is not going to die. Heis going to live. I feel, I know it. Go back to your post, every one ef you, and leave it not until every remedy is exhausted, un- til death itself has set his seal upon him, for I will not believe that he is dying. Go back and do what you can. You canuot do more, but don’t giveup. Tam his wife, and I say that he will not give up watil the end itself is upon us.” History mentions no mil‘tary chieftain who ever turned a defeat into victory or led a forlorn hope to success that showed greater nerve or grit in the hour of ex- treme peril. ‘Phe physicians returned to their post for a last despairing effort, and not many hours later Mrs. Gartield com- municated her spirit of hopefulness and undaunted courage to the President him- self, He regained his hope, and from that hour he began to mend. ‘ How many more stations must we stop at be- fore we get through ?” inquired the Pre- But for the heroisin of Mrs. Garfield he might never have asked the quesiion.

Canada Pacific Raiiway.

(Montreal Gazette, Aug. 31.)

Yesterday a meeting of the Directors of the Canada Pacific Railway Company was held at the head office in this city. The important business transacted had relation to the issue of the land bonds, in accordance with the Act of incorpora- tion. The contract for the sale of twenty millions of dollars of the Company’s five per cent. land grant gold bonds was duly executed, andthe Board instracted the President and Secretary to execute the mortgage as authorized at the meetiog of shareholders held in Winnipeg on the 19th of July last. The mortgage secur- ing the bouds is made in favor of the Hon. Sir Alexander Campbell, the Hon. Alexander Mackenzie, M. P., and Sam- uel Thorne, Esq,, of New York, who are constituted the trustees. The name of Mr. Mackenzie, as one of these trustees, will doubtless be a surprise to some of our readers; but a moment's thought will convince the public that Mr. Mac- kenzie’s having consented to act in this capacity is a matter of siucere congratu- Iaiion. One of the advantages, and cer- tainly not the least among the many ad- vantages of the coutract recently mace between the Government aud the Syndi- cate, is that it removes this great public work from the arena oi party politics, ‘and the persounel of the trast will as- suredly tend to confirm the public satis- faction at this result,
