Body of an Unknown Man found in the Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Various Rumors and Theories

Never since the Campbell murder has there been as much excitement in Carleton as there was yesterday, the cause being the peculiar discovery of the remains of an unknown man in the Roman Catholic burying ground, at Lancaster.

The remains are a greatly decomposed mass which will largely depend for recog- nition omthe articles of clothing. Al) sorts of steries are told. Some persons alleged that the remains were those of Patrick Me- Manus whose sudden and mysterious dis- appearance from Portland some two years since caused so much excitement.

Others are quite sure that it is the body of George Lamb, of Oxford, N. 8., who ran away from his home in October, 1885 and remained in Carleton for a couple of weeks. Lamb, when he left home had about $500 in cash and _ his sudden dis- appearance from Carleton has never been explainad away.

Another theory was that it was the body of Elias White, whose disappearance from Portland will be remembered.

The next question was, how the corpse came to be inthe burying ground. It is generally believed that the body was taken to the shore a short distance from the burying ground ina boat, and carried on boards from the beach to the place where it was found. M. Brennan, the caretaker, says: ‘‘] believe the person or persons who put that body in the burying ground saw a rrave | had opened on Tuesday open, and wishing to dispose of the body decided to put it in the open grave before it was _re-

filled. I filled itin on the following day aud prevented their carrying out their planus. When they got to the cemetery

they found the grave filled in and throwing the body down hurried away.

The Lansdowne Evictions. QUEENSTOWN, May 1. William O’Brien, editor of the United lreland, and Mr. Kilbride, one of the ten- ants evicted from Lord Lansduwne’s estates, sailed for New York on the steamer Umbria. O’Brien was presented with awldresses from various bodies. In the »ourse of his remarks he said he carried vith him the full approval of the Irish peo- ple and felt that wheo liberty-loving Cana- lians heard the true account of Lord Lans wowne 8s cruelty to the tenants, they would uot tolerate being governed by such a man. ———_—- - —

Norwegian Emigrants.

Cuarranooga, Tenn., May 1.

Some 300 Norweigan emigrants passed through the city last night for Salt Lake City to join the Mormans. Several women when told they were liable to become the wives of men already wedded opened their eyes and renounced allintentions of sub- mitting to such proceedings.
