Mr. McFayden was em- ployea in the carpenter shop, Mr. Prauzht in the car shop aud Mr. Chappe! in the blacksmith shop. We have not heard the names of the Grits who are to. succeed them.

Fire av Summersive.—A fire broke ont in the Clifton House, Summerside, this morning, and betore it could be extin- guished the roof of that popular hostelry was badly damaged by fire aud the farni- ture suflered greatly by water. The ffre starved in the third ffoor, and is thougit to have been cau-ed by a defective fine. There is insurance on both house and fur- niture.

Wuere Liewrnixe Strikes.—The belief that lightning will not strike a feather bed was shown to be mistaken by an incident of the electric storm of Saturday. A bolt struck a chimney on the house of Charles Steates, who lives on the Deerfield road. Part of it jumped to the house of Bernard Ross and wre off the conductor pipe. . The other part went down the chimney, ripped the plaster and paper fiom a_ bedroom, and then struck a feather bed. The bed was torn and the feathers scattered about the room.— Utica Morning Herald.

A Fause Atarm.—There was a false alarm of fire in the vicinity of the Hotel Davies last evening, anda good deal of excitement was caused. The firemen and several hundred citizens were on the scene in ebort order.

MR, M’'CREADY’S LECTURE.

The lecture delivered by Mr. McCready in Zon Church basement, last evening, was decidediy the mest interesting of thas season,and, in our opinion, one of the best, Written in smooth aud elegant English and lelivered in a clear and pleasing manner, it convered some valuable information concerning the form- ation of ours Federal Parliament and the conduct of business in our House of Com- mons, At the same time it was relieved by mavy humorous pas sages and some pathos which enchained the attention of all who heard it. In point of tone, too, it was unexceptional, Mr, McCready threw otf his party predelic- tions for the nonce’ and gave anu unbiased description of reveral of those who have been our foremost men in Parliament. Of these were Sir John McDonald and Alex- ander McKenzie, Howe and Tupper, Mc- Gee, Blake and Jaurier. The iigh'er side of the Parliamentary picture was, presented in the various scenes depicted. A vote of thanks, proposed by Mr, Benjamin Rogers, M. L. A.,of Alberton, seconded by Mr. Bel!, M. L. A., of Summerside, and sup- ported by Messrs. Charles Palmer and T. A. McLean, was conveved to the lecturer by the Hou. Donald Farquhar-on, who occupied the chair.

ARTILLERY ORDERLY ROOMS OPENED

The new o-derly rooms in the drill shed were formally opened la-t evening. Besid:s the officers and members of the two, city companies of Artillery their were present

¢ mmanding 82nd Battalion, Major Weeks, commanding the Charlutte:own Engineers, with the officers of that corps, Captain Stewart of No3 Company 82nd Battalion, and Asst.-Surgeon Johnson, 82nd Batialion. The Artillery Band. was also present. Colonel Longworth, commanding the Art- illery, presided during the smoking concert

with which the opening was cele- brated, aud «# ~~ splendid literary

and musical programme was presented to the satisfaction of all. After the regular programme was disposed of addressea were delivered by Colonel Moore, Colonel Dogh- erty, Major Weeks, Captain Stewort, and Councillor Nicholson. The orderly rooms have been fitted np with everv regard for the comfort and convenience of officers and men,and thev presented an especially brigbt and pleasing appearance last even- ing. Mr. Charles McGregor, who built the orderly rooma, did his work in a mst ‘atisfactory manner, and well deserved the complimeuts he last evening received.
