Disastrous Fire.—We hear with regret that the barn of Mr. Daniel Martin, at Millcove, was destroyed by fire last night. Two horser, one cow, about 40 burhels of wheat, a quantity of hay and straw, :now- ing machine, plough, and all his far.nmg implements were also destroyed. The fire is supposed to have beea caused by a spark from the chimney of the dwelling house near by. The lose will be about $700 or $800. We hear that there was some insurance.

Porice Covrt.—This forenoon ‘two drunks, Patr'ck McGuirk and Duncan Meg Gregor, was disposed of. The former wa fined $2 or 10 days and the latter $5 or 30 days.

Durant, who is under sentence for the murder of Blanche Lamont was also in- dicted for the murder of Minnie Williams He has not been put up on trial for tce lat ter crime, but his lawyers intend to move to have him tried. This is @ very shrewd move. If the state refusesto try him, it will be in the position of refusing to permit a man who is charged with murder from having an opportunity toclear himeelf. If it does try bire, be must be present in court during the trial. Tbis will mean that he cannot be hanged for the rurder of Miss Lamont until the other case has been disposed of.

Tux Fasryer left here for Summerside ou Sunday morning but was unable to get into that port on account of ice. She could get vo nearer than the ligbtnouse. The steamer then returned to Charlottetown, aod her Summerside cargo was this morning forwarded by rail to this city She will sail for Halifax this evening. Her outward cargo will include 1,500 boxes of cheese for the Liverpool market shipped by Mr. Dillon. The Fastnet will be due at Charlottetown on Saturday next.

Rosstz Bury.—Many of our citizens wil] remember a brief oration on Robbie Burns given by Rev. T. F. Fullerton in the opera house two or three yearsago. It was on the occasion of the Burns anniversary. That oration was admittedly a master- piece of eloquence. It was discussed for davs afterwards and the one regret was that the gration had not been much longer. Citizens will have another opportunity tomorrow night in St. James’ Hall of hear- ing the rev. gentleman on Robbie Burns’ interpretation of humanity and nature. That there will be acrowded houre is a foregone conclusion.

Cap iy a Vattse.—About 7 o’clock on Wednesday morning e#ome of the passengers of the Quebec and Levis Ferry were startled by the cry of wn infant. No child, however, was 10 be seen. The cry was repeated, and itwas found to come from a portmanteau which was near by. On opening the bag, a young child, but a few days old was found. I[t was almost, dead from hunger and suffocation. The owner of the portmanteau, who was standing near by, stated that he had come from Beaumont, and was on his way to the yeneral hospital. The reaeon for put- ting the child in the portmantean, he said, was to protect it from barm. Chief Denis, of the Levis police force, accompanied the man to the hospital and saw the child safely placed in the institution. The following label was on the bag which held the child: “Handle with care ; perishable article. — Quebec Chronicle.
