Itwas a fine feraale, between Gand i0 feet in height at the shoulder, with short but perfect ‘‘tushes’’ projecting a few inches beyond the upper lip. There are other elephants in the maharajah’s stud which have been tamed more recently still, It was very gentle and obedient and perfectly fearless and therefore very valuable as a shooting ele- phant—as, for example, on severai occa- sions during the following three weeks it stood without flinching the charge of wounded buffala, tiger and rhinoceros, thus enabling me to take a steady shot. Almost aH elephants show great fear of the Indian rhinoceros. There are few that will not turn tail when they scent their enemy and fewer still that will stand the crash and shert snorts that precede the charge.

About breakfast.time each maging the elephant told off for each guest was brought to the neighborhood of his tent and the hewdah placed upon it, resting upon a saddle composed of two cushions of strong sacking about 6 feet by 2, which rested in turn upon a large cloth covering the whole of the elephant’s back. The howdahs for shooting are lightly built.ef wood and cane work and contain twoseats and racks to held six guns or rifles, three on each side. All this js lashed on by ropes passing under the -elephant’s neck, belly and tail. ‘The-weight which an ele- phant is able to carry upon its back ex- ceeds a ton. Forshort distances they have been known to carry as much as 3,000 pounds, but for long marches half a ton is considered the limit. Many of the ma- harajah'’s elephants had fine tusks, but most tusks are cut at regular intervals to prevent them from injuring one another. One or two of the fighting elephants, how- ever, had pointed tusks.

Paris Red Tape.

The Gaulois relates a little tmcident which seems to imply a good deal of red tape in at least one department of Paris municipal affairs. A few.days ago a re- tired policeman appeured.at the bureau .of his district te collect his pension, whch was two quarters in arrears. He handed to the commissioner as proof of the.cor- rectness of his demand a ‘‘certificat de vie,’’ or paper setting forth that he was living and was the preper applicant far the pension in bis name. This certificate was duly examined, and the policeman re- ceived a check for the amount-of she last quarter.

‘‘But—excuse ina,”’ he.ebjected politely, “there are two quarters coming to me.”’

‘*Yes,’’ assented the commissioner, ‘‘ but in order to give you the other I must have a second certificate.’”’

‘*What,’’ exclaimed the astonished pen- sioner, ‘‘another certificate! Why, the one you have says that I am alive sow, on June 16. ‘That ought to be enough to prove to you that I was equally alive dur- ing last January and February and March.’’

“I cannot argue the matter; if is the law,’’ returned the commissioner.

And it was actually necessary for the policeman to procure a separate certifi- cate aftirming that he was in existence during the first quarter of the yaar 1597, a siinilar declaration for the second quarter being considered to have no possibie bear- mg on the question.

Sport In Medieval English Schools.

Probably the oldest English schools were ¢he London schools described dy Fitz- stephen, who wrote in 1174. He gives in- teresting details of the lighter moments of school time. We hear of scholars who, on certain privileged occasions, attacixed their scboulmasters ‘‘in epigrams or other com- positions in numbers,’’ using ‘‘all that low ribaldry we read of in the ancients,” though ne is glad to hear, ‘*without men- tioning mames.’’ In addition to these ele- gant exercises, they had the ruore robust sports of their time. On Shrove ‘uesday each bey brought his fighting cock to school, and they had cockfights all the morning in the schoolroom, and after din- ner played football in the fields of the suburbs. Every Sunday in Lent there was a sham fight, some of the boys being mounted, the rest on foot. At Kester ther played at obo water quintain, while on sumomer holidays they practiced at archery, leaping, wrestling and stone throwing and in winter slid, skated and went te bull baits and hog fights. No doubt the Lon- don schools had their severer side, and the life was not quite such a round of dissipa- tion as it reads. —London Tablet.

Biggest Farm on Earth.

The largest farm in this country and probably in the world is situated in the southwestern part of Louisiana. It ex- tends 100 miles east and west. It was purchased in 1883 by a syndicate of north- ern capitalists, by whom it is still oper- ated. At the time of its purchase its 1,500,000 acres was a vast pasture for cat- tls belonging to a few dealers in that country. Now itis divided into pasture stations ur ranches, existing every six miles. The fencing is said to have cost about $50,000. The land is best adapted for rice, sugar, corn and cotton. <A tract, say haifa mile wide, is taken, and an en gine is placed on each side. Victoria’s Domestic Justice.

A regular court ef justice—the court of the Marshalsea—is attached to the queen’s household, with its officers and constables, snd the salaries of its officials amaunt to £1,924. This ancient court dates from the reign of Henry VIII, and its duty is to administer justice between the queen's servants, s0 that they may not be drawn into other courts and the queen lose their services. Its jurisdiction extends over all the palaces with the exception of Buck- ingham palace, whose board of green cloth cliims powers within a cireuit of 12 miles trom Whitehall. Both courts are presided over by the same functionaries, the lord steward, treasurer, comptroller and master of the household. When her majesty ascend- ed the throne, the powers they wielded were much inore extensive than they are Now, all crimes, even those of high trea- son, felony and murder, if committed with- in the precincts of the palaces, being ad- judicated by these courts.—New York World.
