FIRE IN GEORGETOWN
$5000 Worth of Property Destroyed,

GEORGETOWN, July 28,
A serious fire occurred in the store of Mesars. <A. A. Macdonald Bros., George- town, last evening. It originated in the meat cellar at 7 o’clock, and was discovered 2 short time afterwards. The greatest portion of the stock in the building was re- moved, but was very much damaged; and the fire was extinguished after it had been burning four hours. The stock in the cellar and on the first floor was burnt, The damage to the stock is estimated at from four to five thousand dollars. It is covered by insurance in the Citizen and British American Companies. The damage to the building is estimated at about five hundred dollars.
The citizens—men, women and children | —and strangers attending the Supreme Court, as well as members of the Bar, worked heroically, otherwise the building and all its conten's would have been destroyed.

Fhe Salvation Army's Grand Demonstration. Lonvon, July 28,
General Booth, of the Salvation Army, has announced a grand parade of the Army in London to-morrow. The object of the demonstration is to influence Ll arliament, in view of the revelations made by the Pall Mall Gazette, to pasa the proposed Criminal Amendment Act, which imcreases the age of consent in girls from thirteen to eight- een years. The Army will march to the House of Commons, and present that body with a petition signed by 500,000 persons, praying for an immediate reform of English criminal laws relating to the corruption of girls. Mrs. Booth, in reply to her letter to the Queen, has received a personal letter conveying Her Majesty’s strongest sympa- thy with the reform work mentioned.

Owing to the fine weather and warm rains bestowed on us by the goodness of Providence, the crops in this locality are in an excellent condition and have the appearance of yielding a good harvest.
Having fine weathor for the past week the farmers are pretty well on with their hay which they find to be as good as usual,
The potatoes also are doing well, and will be a good crop if the bug don’t make his appearance,
One evening not long since my attention was attracted to asmali yacht which shot out from Pownal shore. Its brown sails, which were set to catch the slightest breath of wind, flapped idly against the masts, rather impeding than assisting the work of the rowers. On board the little craft there was a party of nine young Pownal ladies and four young gents of the same place, whose cheerful voices and merry laughter rose up to where I sat with a distinctness almost startling. I watched the boat till she rounded another part of the shore and was hid in darkness. The f llowing sad intelligence was received from Commander Will: ‘* We left Pownal shore about 7 p. m., and enjoyed a pleasant sail for about thrse hours, with singing on board. But when on our returning home the fishing smack unfortunately grounded on Crown Point Reef, being unable to get ashore, we were obliged to lie in that perilous situation till the returning tide. ue night was dark and unusually cold. We had to take off our coats and put them on the ladies who were thinly clad. We then got sails down and huddled ourselves vnder them. At daybreak a party set out in search of ns, but were met at the shore by the fatigued crew of the fishing smack. We were taken to our homes and imme- diately attended to.” The eccurrence caused great exciiement in the vicinity.

Sr. Jonn, N. B., July 28. Charles O’Brien, a young lad of eighteen years of age, son of Fred. O'Brien, Esq., was drowned last evening while bathing in the St. John River at Indiantown. The body was recovered.
Disabled Steamer. ANNAPOLIS, July 28. While on the passage from Yarmouth to St. John, N. B., the steamer Dominion be- came disabled, having broken her shaft. She was towed into St- John by a tug boat.
