There is, however, a mighticr me- mory than that of Laurence Sterne as- sociated with Newburgh, the home ol Sir George Wombwell. In the long gallery is « glass case containing the siddle, holsters, pistol, bit, and bridle of “ the greatest prince who ever ruled in England.” The saddle and holster cases are by no means of puritan sim- plicity, being of crimson velvet heavily embroidered in gold. The pistols are of portentious length, and very thin in the barrel, and the bit is a cruel one with the tremendous check-pieces com- mon two centuries ago—doubtless the Lord Protector liked his horse, like his Roundheads, well in hand. Not quite opposite to these relics hangs the por- trait of 2 lady clad in dark green and demureness. This serious-looking dame is Marvy Cromwell, wife of the second Lord Faueconberg. Im solemn secrecy the remains of him, of whom it was said “if not a king, he was a man whom it was good for kings to have among them,” were conveyed to Newburgh, where they yet repose, the insane fury of the Royalist ghouls, who hung the supposed body of Cromwell as well as that of Ireton on the gallows at Tyburn, having thus been cheated of its noblest rey. The tomb of Cromwell! occupies the end of a narrow chamber at the head of a flight of step stairs, and is an enormous mass of stonework built and cemented into the walls apparently with the object of making it impenetaable. There is no reason to doubt the truth of this story, preserved in the Bellasyse family for two centuries and a quarter. It is nota legend, but a genuine piece of family history, and implicitly believ- ed on the spot. —_ oo Mr. Raskin has given an explanation of the Meaning of the title Fors Cla- vigera,” asfollows :-— That title means many things, and is in Latin because | could not have given an English one that meant so many. Briefly, the first fors is courage, the second patience, the third fortune.”
