Young Girl Dies Afier Taking Poisonous Drugs.

Two Arrests in Connection with the Affair.

ANOTHER poisoning case has develored in Charlottetown, which is creating con- siderable sensation. The victim is a gir]

of age, the daughter of Mr. Donald Mce- Eachern who keeps a boarding house on Richmond Street, near the London House corner. A man named William Larter, who keeps a saloon in a portion of the house occupied by the McKacherns, is under arrest charged with supplying the poisonous drugs which caused the poor girls death. The circumstances of the case, so far as THe Examiner has been! able to obtain them, are about as follows :}

Oa Friday Miss McEachern was in her usual good health, and was out about towa in the afterncon. Shortly after her return home, about five o'clock, she was taken sudden y ill, vomiting and purging. An hour or two later, her father called at De. H. D. Johuson’s office, on Kent Street,and asked him to call and see his daughter who, he thought, was suffering from English cholera. The Dr. responded to the cali, and on arrival at the house found Miss Mc- Eachern very ill in ber room. The Dr. did ali he could to relieve the poor giri’s suf- ferirgs. He soon. discovered, however, that there was something more serious than cholcra the matter, and teid her parents avd herself so. She then told the Dr. that she had been betzayed; and her betrayer had given bez a powder which she had taken about five o’viock, and that imined- iately after using the powder she had been taken ill. She declined, however, to tell who had given her the powder. On Satur- day afternoon Dr. Johnson called in Dr. James Warburton teconsult. The resr’j;, of the consultation established what the Dr. already knew, and the conclusio"; was arrived at that nothing could be “one for the girl, that her death was but a matter of a very short time. She linger.d until about elgat o’elock on Saturday evening, when the eud ca:e.

The facts of the case were reported to D-. James McLeod, cororer, who prompt! y summoned a jury made up as follows, - Th mas A. Maclean, foreman, Char’ es Smaliwood, Caleb H. Schurman, Ac am Fife, Joseph H. Clark, Peter Stewart, and Waiter P. Doull. The jury viewed the body on Saturday evening, and r gq" ested Drs. This warrant was placed in the hands of Sergeant Bradley and Officer Campbell to execute. They heard that Slate left here for Summerside in the Northumberland yesterday afternoon, and they left here for that place by early train this morning. On arrival in Summerside they searched the steamer, but covll not find any s‘gns of Slate. Believing, however, that Slate was secreted somewhere on board, they te- mained on the steamer and went over te Point du Chene in her, continuing their seare’) during the trip.

Tu-day Larter agaiv 8 peared before His Honor to answer bh, charge preferred against him by M’.re\sal Cameron, which is outlined aay the copy of the warrant given above. He was represented by Mr. W. 8. Stewart. "he court room was well filled with spe¢’ ators, and the prisoner was the cynosurs of all eyes. Beyond changing colot’a trifle when the charge against him wa’, anncunced, he did not seem much ¥erturbed Attoraey-General Peters related the cir- cumste,nces of the case, and asked for an ad- jourmnent antil to-morrow. He said that judg mg by the facts as reported to him there was no doubt of the girl’s death being caused by her taking poisonous drugs for the parpose procuriug an abortion, and he thought it ‘ sould be proved that some at least of these drugs were administered by the prisoner. Tie doctors had not yet completed their work sufliciently to be able to determine the exact character of the poison taken, but they would likely be able to tell shortly.

His Honor then adjourned the case until te- morrow.

Mr. W. S. Stewart said there was no evid- ence against the prisoner and asked that he be released on bail

The Magistrate said he could rot comply with the request. The charge against Larter Was a very serions one—punishable with im- prisonment for life—and he did not know but it might develop into a charge of murder.

This closed the proceedings.

Mr. A. S. Johnson, Ph. G, assisted by Drs. H. D. Johuson and Warburton, made an analysis of the contents of the stomach this torenoon. They will report at the inquest to be held this evening at half pist seven.

A pretty wedding took place at the Weir last night, at the residence of Mr. William Smirdeo, Clinton Street. The contracting parties were Ohas. F. Hopkins and Mies Caroline May Riggs, both of this city The ceremony was private, and was at- tended by a large number of relatives and friends of the contracting couple, who wished them happiness. Rev. T. Clayton Welles, of the Winslow Congregational Church, performed the ceremony, which was witnessed by a large number of the friends of each. The bride’s sister was bridesmaid and a cousin of Mr. Hopkins was his best man.

The ladies were very handsomely attired, aud the happy pair made as attractive a couple as have stood at Hymen’s shrine in town for years. Mr. Hopkins is employed at Cobb Bates & Yerxa’s, and his fellow workmen in that store presented him with a handsome chair. Invitations were sent out to about eighty parsons. Mr. Hopkins and bride wil) settle on School Street after returning froin their bridal tour.—Taunton, ( Mass.) paper.

Mr. Matthews’ paper on young people’s work, and Secretary Raymond’s address on ‘‘The Relations of the Young Men's Christian Association to the Church” brought out many good points and should result in a greater interest in young peo- ple’s work by stimulating the members to renewed energy aud activity

Boys Poisoned in St. John.

Sr. Journ, May 1. A boy named Gilbert Lingiey was, with soine companions, eating popcorn on Satur- day. They found a box which had con- tained ‘‘rough on rats,” and were playing with it. The boy died suddenly, with symptoms of pvisoning, and it is supposed that the contents of the bx got mixed with the popcorn.

Montreat, April 28.—In his address be- fore the convocation of the law faculty of McGill university to day, Dean Trenholm spoke strongly in favor of the new scheme of a six years’ course, at the end of which the students will graduate in the law as well as arts. It is said the feeling is very general in’ favor of the plan. It is also announced that next year lectures would be given in the French language, and it 1s likely McGill will receive a large accession from the French-Canadian students.

Quesec, April 28.—John George Col clough, Bb A., of Laval University, was calied to the bar on Saturday last before the Lord Chancellor in the court of chan- cery of the four courts of Dublin. Mr. Culclough, who is the eldest son cf John Richard Coiclough, of Bic, county Rim- ouski, is the first Csnadian who has ever been called to the Irish bar otherwise than honoris causi. He will practice in Dublin.

S., April 28.—The steamcr Portia, from Newfoundland, arrived here at 11 o'clock to-night with the Captaia anc! 17 of the crew of the British steamer Casile- gate, which vessel was wrecked on the voyage from Tantzic vis Tyne, with a cargo of sugar for Philadelphia. At 8 o'clock on the morning of the 27th the Captain and men extinguished the fires and left the steamer. Half an hour later she sud- denly listed and disappeared, head foremost.
