OTTAWA tCPi—A new year’s shrinkage in job openings pushed Canadian unemployment to 541.000 at mid-January—127.- 000 higher than in December and about the same as a year earlier.

A joint report Wednesday by the Dominion Bureau of Statis- tics and the labor department showed a January jobless rate of 8.3 per cent: one out of every 12 persons in the labor force was unemployed.

The Maritimes had the high- est. jobless rate in the country. climbing to 14.8 per cent of the labor force in January from 11.6 per cent in December. The number of Jobless increased 18.-
