While this altogether impolite scru- tiny was being made the clacking of sandals once more sounded up the cor- ridor, and a little gentleman with a head so bald that it surely required no tonsure, entered. He bowed to his callers, and announced himself as Father Alexis. Yes, he would be glad to show the gentlemen through the monastery — that was, of course, through as much of it as he might with propriety conduct them. “But,” said he, ‘there is truly little to be witnessed. We are, you know, beg- gars, an. such as we have is given us by our kind friends.”

Whereupon it happened, as was sub- sequently discovered, that each of the visitors suddenly became speculative as to how he could offer this courtly gentleman money, and whether he would not be insulting him in doing so,

The floor was bare, and there were no seats either in the body of the chapel or within the slender altar rail. If a bishop officiat- ed within those walls he would have to stand, The two visitors had ex- pected to see in the chapel many wor- shiping Capuchins, and one of them ventured to ask Father Alexis why it was untenanted.

“Ah,” said he, as soon as he had comprehended the halting French. *Wehavea time for all things. Our routine must be adhered But do not fear that we have not plenty of time for worship. When you are in your beds we are here. I shall tell you when you are in the corridor how we spend our days.”

His promise being fulfilled, this is the Capuchin’s daily round oftduty: At 8.15 in the evening he goes to bed in his little nime-foot square cell. At mid- night the bell in the tower clangs out the summons to ‘‘choir” as it is called. hour and a half, or until half-past one—the brothers unite in the singing of matins and lauds. This done, to bed again until a quarter past four, when they arise for the day. At five o'clock there is choir again until half-past seven, when the morning meal is partaken of. Breakfast over, the tables are transformed into desks, and study is engaged in until half-past eleven. Then half an hour of choir once more, and at high noon the brethren sit down to dinner, one of them reading from some theological volume during the repast. From half- past twelve till two must be the most welcome time of the day to even these ascetics, for this is the hour of *‘Gratias Deo,” when, by the grace of God, they are allowed to speak and to engage in conversation. Dyring all other hours of the day strict silence must be main tained, unless consent to the contrary has been obtained from the Father Su- perior.

The time for speech having fled, the Capuchins engage in toil. Three of them do all the carpentry about the monastery, others have the care of the gardens, but only the lay brethren who are usually uneducated—are ob- liged to perform the more menial tasks, such as sweeping and dish washing, The others engage in studies until half- past five, when there is once more choir until seven o’clock. Then supper, half an hour’s “‘recreation,” which means reading such religious works as are not on the ordinary list, and at eight o’clock prayers. By this time bed-time has come, and the Capuchin’s day, which is in no way different from scores which have passed, and sceres which are to come, is gone.

The little cells in which the fathers sleep are small and desolate. A single blanket on a straw pallet, graniteware washing utensils, and a crucifix nailed against the wall, compose the furni- ture. Everything is clean as possible. To strange olfactories, however, the permeating odor of onions and garlic is unpleasing. All of the brethren are French, and they adhere to their nation’s love for these pungent escul- ents. Even their rough brown habits carry the taint of garlic, much as the smoke of tobacco impregnates the cloth- ing of the devotees of the nicotian herb.

The Order is a subsidiary branch of the Trappists, whose mode of life is one of the most rigorous of all the monastic organizations. It isstated by Father Alexis that but out of tifteen who enter the Capuchins as postulants takes the novices’ vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, while but twelve out of twenty-five of the novices take the final vows which are administered to him who maintains his desire for monastic life.

The monastery at Ottawa is the only ene of the kind in Canada. The Order has another branch in Kentucky, and is very strong in France. The reason for the establishment of these two cis- Atlantic monasteries is that the new Freych law relating to service in the army compels every member of any monastic order under thirty years of age to perform military duty. The or- dinary priesthood is exempt. Thus it is that all of the Ottawa Capuchins are men, awaiting the arrival of their third decade, when they will return to France. But three of them have taken the tinal vows.

lt is well known that the Capuchins are a most exclusive Order. The postu- lant must bea man of great erudition, and must have unimpeachable social connections. Father Alexis, the Super- ior at Ottawa, was for some years secretary of the Spanish Legation at Washington, and comes of an old Lusitanian family. He has been in the Order but four years, and has ad- vanced with unprecedented rapidity.— Roden Kingsmill.
