The Proposed Schoo!troom.

Texpers for the erection of a schoolhouse at the ‘‘ West End” are to bo im on the first of February. The building is, we understand, to be similar in size, 8.1\p>, appearance and in vterial of construction, to the Wesleyan Academy. We are informed tiat the City School Trustees pay in rent for tho Wesleyan Academy Bu.lling an amount equal to four por cent. of the cost o” its construction. They pay $1,650.00 a year ; and the cost of the Wesleyan Aca- dsny—exclusive of the proportion of furni- tire provided by the City School Trustees —was, therefore, upwards of $40,000. At a moderate estimate, then, the coat of the proposed schoolhouse—including appurten- ances—will be from $3,009 to $40,009.

A; to the propriety of placing that much more debt upon the City, we offer no opin- ion. We dare say the Trustees will be able to show that its erection will resul: im a saving of outlay for rents. Bat we submit that care should be taken that so costly a building be ‘lit to look at "—3h uld, at least, not be a positive eyesore to tne peo- ple who have to pay for it.

THE RIOT CASE.

| Tar trial of the traverser Collins, drags its slow length along. Me. C. Palmer vpensd the case on benalf of the traverser yesterday afternoon. He laid down the principle that no man or body of men can legally do anything that has a tendency to provoke a breach of the peace. The Orange Association, by flaunting their banners m the fases of Roman Catholic Irishmen, did that which had a tendency to provoke a breach of the peace ; and, therefore, they sbould take the consequences. The Orange man, he said, carried firearms, which is, it- seli, illegal ; they fired shots before a single stone was thrown ; they provoked the mot and began it, and had no right to complain. With respect to Collins, it was not proved that he had prearranged with others to at- tack the Orange prozession. In fact ho just happened upon the scene; and it was not until after hs heard shots fired and saw blood tlow, that he took any pari whatever in the fight

Mr. Henry Hug es was the first witness called on behalf of the traverser.

The Attorney General objected to the ex- amination of the traversers as witnesses on behalf of Collins, but the Chief Justice ruled against the objection, and all the traversers will be examined.

There are three thousand men out of em- ployment in Quebec, it is said. Almost as many, We suppose, are out of employment there every winter, These men get high wages while navigation is open, and few of taem need allow their families to suffer want of any of the necessaries of life.

The leaders of a Protestant organization of London are much pleased at the Vatican’s sup- posed abandonment of the Scotch Hierarchy scheme. It is said the scheme was abandoned because of steps taken to enforce the Scotch laws aginst papal jurisdiction.

The Eurl ot Wicklow, it is reported, is about to marry Miss Clara Jerome, daughter of Mr. Leonard W. Jerome, of New York. The Earl, who is about thirty-eight years of age, suc- ceeded his uncle, Sir William Forward How- ard, as fifth Earl of Wicklow, Viscount Wick- low and Baron Clonmore, in the peerage of freland, in the year 1869.
