What's new in 1998 for the National Graduate Register?

It's me again! | hope that everyone had a happy holiday and that the beginning of the 1998 school year is a good one. Now that the holi- day season is over, it is time to hit the books and start the job search forthe summer of 1998

and beyond. If you remember, there was an article printed in the Cadre last semester that introduced the National Gradu- ate Register. If you have for- gotten what itis, ll give youa brief reminder. The NGR is a an Internet service provided by Industry Canada that al- lows students and recent graduates to place a resume in the NGR database. The resume that students enter can then be accessed by potential employers. Being a student means that you have to be resourceful with many aspects of life. Two of these aspects are money and time. This is where I come in.

The National Graduate Register is a FREE service to all students at the University and College level. as well as recent graduates of such insti- tutions. This saves the cost of photocopying. travel. postage, etc... Not to mention the sav- ings of your time.

The issue of time can be looked at quite easily. It takes between one and two hours (that does not have to be done all at once) to enter all of the

information necessary tocom- plete a profile for the NGR. After your resume has been entered, it is possible to con- duct job searches, and even apply for some jobs, within the NGR system. The NGR has recruited companies from all over Canada and around the world to hire students in their chosen field of study. The employers that have come “on- line” with NGR range from pharmaceutical companies to the City of Moncton. In fact the City of Moncton isdoing all of its hiring for the summer of 1998 through the NGR serv- ices! Just think of all of the leg work you can save. Your resume will be available for hundreds of registered com- panies and businesses to look at. Of course all of your per- sonal information is kept con- fidential and can only be re- leased to an interested com- pany of business with your approval.

There is a newsletter released on- line called the “Node™ that has job search tools, hints for writ- ing resumes, and information about job trends. One of the links from the NGR site is Campus WorkLink. This site offers job postings for employ- ers who are actively looking for new employees. In order

to gain access to this site, you will need to contact either the Career Development Officer (within Student Development) or myself (office -- Robertson Library basement, room 08).

Itis important to remem- ber that the NGR is only one of many services available in your search foremployment (either seasonal or permanent). There- fore, it is necessary to explore other options both on and off of the Internet. Keep search- ing the newspapers and local bulletin boards and the Career Development Centre for job postings.
