AMPHIBIANS, FISH, AND OTHER THINGS

The Crocuses started flowering in Donagh on April 13th. The poplars were in catkins and ice covered 90% of Glenfinnon Lake, 100 % of Lake Verde, and 70 % of Mount Stewart Pond on April 14th.

Thelma Murchinson reported frogs croaking on April 16 in 1990 compared to April 16th in 1988 and April 15 in 1989. The spring peepers started singing on April 19th in Donagh.

The American Smelt were travelling up Johnson's River to their spawning beds along the stream on April 26th.

The east side of Pier # 1 of the Hillsborough Bridge Piers collapsed in the week prior to May 17th, 1990.

CROW ATTACKS FLICKER ’ by Barry Bain

On May 24th, 1990, George Coade, Scott MacDonald and Barry Bain observed a crow pecking at a smaller bird it had pinned to the ground behind the Beach Grove Forestry Office. When the crow was scared off, a Northern Flicker got up off the ground and flew away. The flicker seemed to be uninjured by the attack.

SCIENCE FAIR PRIZES AWARDED

The Natural History Society's team of judges (Dr. Charles Keuper, Rev. Donald Wilkinson, and Ms. Caroline Meincke) reviewed the entries in this years Science Fair. They found the quality of the exhibits to be very high and they awarded the Society's Natural History Prizes in three categories. The winners, their school, and the title of their exhibits were as follows:

2nd Prize - Kathie McNally of Charlottetown Rural High School for the

exhibit "New Technology: Harmful or Beneficial".

3rd Prize - Betty MacLean and Alison MacAusland of Nestisle High for the

exhibit "Nitrates: Helpful/Harmful“. ' Intermediate Category Grades 8 & 9 lst Prize - Ben Smith of Birchwood.Junior High with the exhibit "The Effects of Acid Rain on Insects“. 2nd Prize - David Cousins of Hernewood Junior High for the exhibit "Miminegash Fossil Finds". 3rd Prize - Dorian Hoge of Cardigan Consolidated with the exhibit "Basic Botany" Junior Category Grades 5, 6 & 7 _

lst Prize - Jeffery Rowe and Matthew Duffy of Montague Consolidated for

the Exhibit "Endangered Animals in Canada".

2nd Prize - Randy Mills of St. Jean's Elementary for the exhibit

"Noodpeckers of Prince Edward Island".

3rd Prize - Nathan Townsend and John McNabb of Stanhope - Grand Tracadie

with the exhibit "Endangered Species".
