Tar Fire Last Nicnut.—At twenty min. utes past eleven last night there was an alarm of fire. A new building at the north end of the city—the property of Mr. James Jones, Messenger for the Provincial offices —wa; in flames. The Hook-and-Ladder Company, under command of Captain Butcher, were on the ground as soon as possible under the circumstances; and the building was speedily levelled. Fortunately it was detached, and the night was very calm, or we might this morning be called upon to report a very serious fire. The building was new, unfinished, unoccupied, and carefully locked; and there is scarce« ly a doubt that the fire was the work of an incendiary. Mr. Jones had in- vested his all, and labored hard in the erection of ‘‘a house of his own.’’ The loss is therefore, for him, very heavy. At the fire there were many expressions of in. dignation at the incendiary act and of sym- pithy with Mr, Jones. We trast that steps will be taken to capture and bring the in, cendisry to justice. The tools of the work- men engaged at the building were burnt— with the exception of two saws.

GOVERNOR GENERAL'S TRIP.

It is understood that their Excellencies will leave Ottawa for Manitoba about the last of this week. Besides the staff they will be accompanied by Hon. J. E. Cau. chon and Hon. David Mills, The news. paper correspondents are gathering at Toronto and a representative of the “ Illus- trated London News’’ is expected by Allan steamer, The Canadian route to Manitoba —viz, the Dawson rood, running from Prince Arthur’s Landing, on the north shore of Lake Superior, through the water. stretches—was closed early this season by the Dominion Government, the cost of maintenance being sadly out of proportion to the number of emigrats carried. The vice-regal party will therefore take the Duluth or Proctor Knott route—steamer from Collingwood, on the Georgian Bay, to Duluth ; thence by the Northern Pacitic to Moorehead, and down the Red River by Kilson’s steamer to Winnipeg, which will probably be reached by August 5. Until Winnipeg is reached no official programme for the tqur in the northwestern country can be prepared. It is known, however, that besides the rounds of receptions, in - augurations, &c, at Winnipeg, their Excel}. lencies will visit the Mennonite settlement at Red River, and that on the west side of Red River, near the Dakota line; the Ice- land settlement on Lake Manitoba: the northwest seat of Government at Battle- ford, and other points of interest in the extreme west. Flat~bottomed boats of light draught will take them down the main or south branch of the Wan or Kissis~ kah-che.wun (the mighty river that runs swift), and the Dominion Mounted Police will be reviewed, probably at Fort. Pelly. Reports from Winnipeg say that prepara- lions for their Excellencies’ reception are already being made there under the direc- tion of the Local Government, and the Mayor and City Council. The aoe party expect to be back at Rideau Hall by the third week in September.
