Women's Rugby

The women's rugby team is another example of a team happy with their play, but not their the results of their games. With a tie at the begin- ning of the season to Dalhousie, and a disappointing loss to Acadia last week- end, they have found themselves in a tough situation. The season has given some great individual results so far, as Jaclyn Coady and Jessica MacDonald are the two top scorers in all of the AUS. The team will be looking for these two players to lead the way has they face their biggest challenge yet,

as they finish the regular season play- ing against St. FX and St. Mary's this weekend (these teams are numbered 1 and 2 in the AUS). Not only this, but UPEI must win at least one of these games or the season will be over. "This is definitely the biggest challenge we have faced this year," said fullback Melissa Perry, "and probably right now our biggest goal." Despite having their backs against the wall, the team feels confident that they can beat both St. FX and St. Mary's, and that they'll still be playing rugby beyond this weekend.

Field Hockey

Despite the team's disappoint- ment in the result of their games, the players are still confident and opti- mistic about the rest of the season. "We are the best team in the league on paper,” says team goalie, Ambyr Gallant, "we just have to prove it on the scoreboard." Defence does not seem to be a problem for this team, as both Maureen O'Connor's and Joy Elliot's play has impressed their fellow teammates. "We have to score... bottom line," says team leader Tracey Gairns. And the team has been practis-

Jon Smith: Male

The male player of week five of the sports season is Jon Smith. Jon (aka Smitty) played a solid soccer game on defence against Mt. Allison Saturday. Sunday Smitty played another strong game on defence, but it was his game tying goal against Memorial that made him such an out- standing player for this week. By scoring the tying goal Jon Smith helped UPEI extent their unbeaten . streak to eight games. Smitty is a graduate from Three Oaks High School, and is currently in his third year of a science program, where he is studying math. In his spare time Smitty enjoys playing sports. Tracey Gairns: Female

The female player of week five of the sports season is Tracey Gairns. Tracey played a strong offensive game against UNB over the weekend. Tracey's con- tinuous pressure was an impressive sight as she encouraged, and lead the women's field hockey team to its first win of the season, which was then fol- lowed by a tie. Tracey graduated from Bluefield High School, and is currently in her fourth year of her Business degree. Tracey's interests include bik- ing and running, which one day she hopes to use when she achieves her aspiration of being an iron man in the triathlon.
