An Episode of an Indian Raid ia Utah Nearly Thirty Years Ago,

“In taking testimony in these Indian cases,” said Mr, Spearman, *‘I frequent- ly hear some very interesting stories concerning early frontier life. I re- member one case in particular, which I thought to be one of the most remark- able exhibitions of courage it an 5- year-old boy that I have ever heard of. It occurred near the town of Beaver, in Utah. attacked by the Indians and one manu who wes visiting the ranchman killed, and for a while it seemed as if the whole party, wife and children, would falla prey tothe savages. The house was surrounded by the Indians and the people within defended themselves as best they could, but the ranchman, watching his opportunity, lowered his two children, eight and twelve years old, from the back window and told them to try to make canon and fellow it down to Beaver, where they could obtain help. The two children succeeded in reaching the canon unobserved, and, with presence of mind and bravery which, TF think, is remarkable for a child of that age, the boy told his sister to follow down one side of the canon and he would follow the other, so that in case the Indians should find one of them the other might not be observed.
“The children succeeded in reaching Beaver, where a relief party was or- ganized which hastened to the rescue of the besieged party. At the begin-
ning of the siege the Indians had heard the children in the house, and
missing their voices the alert savages discovered that they had gone and en- deavored to overtake them, but being unsuccessful. and knowing that help would soon arrive, withdrew before the rescuers could reach the ranch,”— Denver Republican. How te spell His Name,
“English spelling is remarkable for its indefinite variety,” remarks the Home Journal. The remark is certain- ly not new, but the Journal proceeds to illustrate it. As long as ‘‘tisis” is spelled ‘‘phthisis” says the editor, the voice of the spelling reformer should be heard inthe land. Mr. Turner, in the following incident. in view of our present method of spelling, was entire- ly consistent:—
“Dobbs met his friend Turner on the train. They were both going to Lon- don, and stopped at the same hotel. Turner registered his name:—

‘‘Dobbs, noticing it, exclaimed:—
‘Here, what are you assuming such a foreign, outlandish name for? Are you in any trouble?”
‘Not a bit of it,” replied Turner, “and I am not assuming any foreign name.”
“What kind of aname is that?” de- manded Dobbs.
“That is my identical old name,” persisted Turner, “‘and it is English, too—pronounced plainly, ‘Turner.’”
“T can’t see how you make ‘Turner’ out of those thirteen letters; besides what is your object in spelling that way?” asked Dobbs,
“Well, you see, nobody ever noticed my name on the register when I wrote it ‘Turner,’ ” excl..imed the latter, **but since I commenced writing it *Phth- olognyrrh,’ I set them all guessing. They wonder what nation I am from, what my name is. I can now hear people talk about me all around, It is as I said before, English spelling. ‘Phth,’ there is the sound of ‘t’ in ‘phthisis;’ ‘olo,’ there is the ‘ur’ ir ‘colonel,’ ‘gn,’ there is the ‘n’ in ‘gnat;’ ‘yrrh’ is the sound of ‘er’ in ‘myrrh. Now, if that doesn’t spell ‘Turner, what does it spell?”
Presence of Mind,
A young woman in a Western state. who lives near to a railway crossing, looking out of the window the other day, saw a laborer jump from one track to the other to escape an approaching
freight train. He was apparentiy dazed by terror, and stood still, not
seeing that behind an express train was rushing down upon him.
The girl saw that before she could make him understand his danger it would be too late. She therefore threw up her arms, shrieking wildly, ‘Help! help! help!” trusting to the impulse which sends a man on the instant to the relief of a woman in distress.
“I'm coming!” shouted the Irishman, springing toward her in time to escape the engine asitrushed past. He stared back at it, and then at the woman cry- ing and laughing in the window, and taking off his hat with shaking hands, said:—
