The Commissioner also described the state of a number of streets, partly opened in Ward 5. which he recommended to the at tention of the Council. The report ended with a paragraph relating to the bad state of the sidewalks and the want of stone to fill up holes and ruts im the different streets.

I beg leave to state that our Steam Fire Ensines were never in a more efficient con- dition than at the present time. A new steam chest have recently been placed on the Rollo Engine, and all the deficient fire tubes on the Silsby Enuine has been replaced with new ones, The stock of hose is all in good repair aud would last for some years if we had a bet ter water supply. When we are obiged to put on 1,000 or 1,500 feet of hose, the pressure is so great near the engine that we cannot tell when it will give way. If there was no ueces- | sity forlaying more than six or eight hundred feet, I have no doubt that it would last for some years to come.

The introduction of steam fire engines has rendered the hand engines almost useless. One hand engine, the Tremont, being sufficient.

The han | engines are now laid up inordin- ary, and tie several companies have been dis- banded. | therefore respectfully suggest that said engin s be offered for sale.

The vessel which was overhauled in Syd- ney harbor because of certain suspicious circumstances connected with its papers, turns out to be laden, if not with the for-| tunes of Cyesar, with those certainly not less important inthe eyes of its charterers, the a new colony and anew nation. in reading the story of their and aims, it seems as if we were rted back 300 years, to the days in which Spanish adventurers were seeking the golden city of El Dorado in the marshes of Guiana. The ship has just land. ed 240 French emigrants in New Brit- ain, and is now returning home for ano- their detachment. When these arrive it is proposed to make a descent upon the north- ern coast of western Australia, to establish an independent colony there in defiance of Great Britain. This extravagant plan ap- pears to have emanated from a Marquis de Rays, lately Bolivia Consul at Havre, who some years ago issued a glowing prospec- tus, setting forth the flourishing state of the colonies generally, the richness of the northwest coast of Australia as a particular ‘ tield for colonization, and closing with the offer of land to which he had even less jclaim than the British Government, whose rights he denies, for five francs an acre. This offer was made in the name of a com- pany witha capital of 2,000,0C0 francs, which was to establish ‘‘free institutions ”’ and a great people in the far distant anti- podes. It is amazing, in the first place, that any such scheme should suggest itself to a sane man, and, in the second place, that some hundreds of others, also ac- counted sane, should risk their lives and fortunes on such a fantastic errand. The whole undertaking would present a half romantic, half-ludicrous spectacle were it not for the recollection of the positions and perils to which some hundreds of thoughtless Frenchmen are exposing them- selves in the hope of founding a new State.
