A San Francisco man offers a $150 purse to the man who breaks the world’s record.
Bic Time Comine.—The ladies of the Convent de Notre Dame are hard at work preparing for the bazaar and strawberry festival to be held in the Market Hall on the 3rd and 4th July next. They are de- termined to make it one of the pleasantest and in every way most successful affairs of the kind ever held in this Province, and we feel assured that their efforts will not be in vain. A Puizasant Eventnc.—Captain Long- worth, of No. 2 Batt., G. A., entertained the officers. non-commissioned officers and men of the Battery at his residence last evening, Colonels Irving and Moore and Capt. Weeks were also present. After the usual loyal tvasts had been duly honored, a number of impromptu toasts, mostly of a martial character, were proposed and re- sponded to in pleasing speeches. It was the most successful and enjoyable company dinner that has yet been given in this city.

SETTLEMENT Wits Liquor Deaters.—The Chairman of the Police Committee and the Chairman of the United Temperance Com- mittee have held a meeting and considered the offer by the liquor dealers affeeted by re- cent decisions of the Supreme Court, with re- gard to a settlement. The parties concerned are not disposed to make any positive state- ment with regard to the matter, but it is understood that the terms ot settlement are agreed upon, the liquor dealers to pay 35 per cent. of all costs and fines against them. It is further understood that the money is ex- pected to be paid over this afternoon. — Monc- ton Transcript.
—__<—_ — Juatovsy Tue Cavse.—Maud MeLel- lan, a young woman formerly employed as a domestic at the Clifton House, St. John, was recently shot and killed in Chicago by a man named Dempsey, whom she declined to marry. This is the second Provincial girl that has come to grief in Chicago at the hands of a jealous lover within « few months.

Nova Scoria Coat Mixes.—The St. John Globe says: There is a rumor afloat that some Americau capitalists have a scheme on foot to purchase all the coal mines in Nova Scotia. On the other hand it is alleged that it is pro- posed to buy only the Joggins mines and con- necting railroads. The two Joggins coal com- panies are called to meet in St. John to con- sider the matter.

PHILHARMONIC Society.—The first practice of the Society was much more successful than many persons anticipated. Seventy singers were present. We learn that the conductor has, in conjunction with Mr. Vinnicombe, taken steps towards the immediate formation of an orchestra, as at first contemp- lated. The names of fifteen young ladies and gentlemen have been mentioned as instru- mentalists of sufficient ability to justify their selection. Music for the orchestra has been ordered. Mr. Earle has kindly consented to be pianist for the Society.

4 Bouv Tuerr.—The Moncton Times says: About a week ago what might be called a re- markably bold robbery occurred at the Mc- Donald farm in Upper Coverdale. During the night some twenty or thirty bushels of potatoes were taken from the cellar, the thieves getting in at the cellar windows, which had been left open, and unlocking the cellar door. During the night the occupants, who all slept in the upper story, thought they heard a noise down stairs, but on going down saw that all was right on the first floor, though the cellar was not examined.

Hauirax MARKET Prices.—The Chronicle says: During the past week there has been a reduction of from ten to fifteen cents a barrel on some grades of flour. Eggs show an up- ward tendency. P. E. eal cite are selling for from one to two cents cheaper than a 2 ago, but there is a great scarcity of Nova Scotia and Canadian grain. Both Island potatoes and the home product are inclined to lower prices, in some cases five cents less per bushel being asked than formerly. American clear pork is somewhat cheaper, while P. E. Island mess of some “grades has risen fifty cents a barrel ; prime mess has been reduced half adollar. Sugar is quoted at about a quarter of a cent higher than last week on nearly all qualities of the refined article, and molasses, of course, has made a corresponding advance, namely, about two or three cents per gallon.

Crakk Brapen.—-This distinguished di- vine, author of ‘‘Ingersoll Unmasked” and other works, is expected to deliver a course of lectures in Halifax next month. It is surmised that he has chosen that time on accouut of the visit of Charles Watts, the secularist orator, who speaks in that city about the samedate. Mr. Braden has, on different occasions, crossed swords with Mr. Watts in discussion, and his friends think he has downed the secularist. It is pro- bable that both speakers will meet in this city about the first of July.
