> a. : The Military Forces of the King- dom rd Wolseley,as Adjutant-General of the British forces, has just issued a

very elaborate set of tables to show the strength and composition of the various branches of the services. The

average number of effective men in the regular army last yearis said to have been 198,065. Of these, in round mum. bers, 62,400 were located in England] = and Wales, 3,900 in Scotland, and 35,- 100 in lreiand—or a total of 10,000. ‘The remainder were on foreign service —India requiring 62,100, the colonies

three times in a score of years bas the strength of the army been greater than itisnow. It was over 200,000 in 1866 and 1867,and agaiu in 1878, when Lord Beaconsfield threw down the eduntlet to Russia, In 1883 we manag- 90 to get along well enough with 181,- haO defenders,so that in two years there gas been an increase of over 16,000 men. 39,000 recruits were added to the ranks during !ast year. As to the auxiliary forces, it is stated that 48,712 men are enrolled in the army _ reserve 119,356 io the militia, 11,590 in the, yeomanry, and 224,012 in the volunteers, This gives a total of 601,734 as the en- rolled strength of the regiments to be provided for in the ensuing Budget. Taking only the men of the regular army who are or ought to be on the home establishment, 66,600 are English, | ~~ 8,300 Seotch and 13,700 Irish As many as 60,300 are Protestants, 16,900 Cathholics, 7,750 Presbyterians, and 4,240 Wesleyans. There are no com- ments accompanying Lord Wolseley’s report.

Three Brothers ‘Killed by a Mob. About two months ago, a fight occur- red in the village of Danville, Kansas, between three brothers named Weaver and aman named Abel Sheard. The latter was fatally wounded, and the Weaver boys were arrested and hurried away to avoid mob violence, Last week they were returned for trial, but their cases were continued for the term with bail fixed at $10,000 each. At one o'clock on the morning of the 19th a mob of forty armed men surrounded the residence of the sheriff, where the pri- soners were,under good guard. Hear- ing them they rushed the prisoners out of the back door and into the basement of the new school building. The sheriff was taken prisoner by the mob and guarded. The deputies finding it use- less to resist surrendered. The Weaver brothers defended themselves in their truggle for life with a revolver, which hey had taken from one of the deputies. They were finally overpowered by the mob and disarmed. Ropes were placed about their necks and preparations were made to hang them to rafters, but the trample of approaching feet fright- ened the mob, so they fired 15 or 20 hots into each man, literally shooting
