It is true they all agree in one thing; and thatis, that society as now organized, is not perfect, and that we should seek to establish a more perfect system. Communists believe that all men should be put upon, and kept upon the same plan; that the man who works the least should enjoy as many of the comforts of life asthe man who works the most. Socialists believe that no man should get only what he earns, and that every man should get all he earns. Communists believe in taking the wealth away from the rich and giving it to the poor; Socialists do

nut believe in taking anything from anyone that he is justly

entitled to. Communists advocate dis tributing all wealth equally among all citizens; Socialists believe only in dis- tributing natural things equally among all people.

People often say that if we should divide the lands and the mines equally among all, some would soon own it all agaio and others would own none. This is true, but Socialists do not advocate dividing the land,but the nationalization of the land. All national property be- longs alike to all. Socialists believe in dividing the rent of these natural things annually, or in what amounts to the same thing—taking the rent tor public purposes. This would distribute the natural things in such a way that no person could spend his share of them any more than the negro can get rid of his freedom. If people were allowed to sell themselves or their children for money,we would in one year have thou- sands of slaves in this country,but they ane allowed to do this and the result is that no person seeks to buy slaves. So if the rent of land were taken for publie purposes, no person would buy land ; those wanting to use it would rent it,and land would no longer be the pre- perty of any person, but of the body politic. All speculation in land would beat anend. No person could make thousands of dollars by merely buying and selling land. No person could make anything out of land then only by work- ing it.

Communists believe in establishing a system of equality ; socialists believe in establishing a system of equality. Com- munists believe that the men would be happy if they were all rich and all poor alike ; socialists believe that the more just the system the more happiness _re- sults.

It is often said that under our present system all have an equal chance, but it is not an equal chance that we want but & just chanee. Cannibels have equal chances ; but that is not argument in favor of cannibalism. What is called an

‘equal chanceis one that favors the strong and the rich,a just chance favors none more than another. “Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven, (that is a_ per- fectly organized society) and his right- eousness (that is a system where every- thing is done right) and all other things will be added unto you, (lhat is no per- - shall suffer.” there will be plenty for all.
