the university would be on board [with fundraising ef- forts] in September, but we only got it in December/Janu- ary. [But] everything is very much still on schedule.”

Ground is expected to be broken in July 2000, and the building is slated for com- pletion in March, 2001.

In the meantime, stu- dents are still curious as to the fate of the familiar Barn, which has been a haven for

countless students and events over the years. “It’s got a lot of memories at- tached to it,” commented one second year student. According to Stephen Lewis, SU VP Finance, its future is still up in the air. “There's talk of turn- ing it into a green space with trees and grass,” he says. That would require that it be torn down. There’s been limited discussion on what's going to happen to it.”

Island Lecture Series

The 17th Annual Is- land Lecture Series is well underway for another year. Featuring lectures in six lo- cations across PEI (Charlottetown, Summerside, Montague, O'Leary, Alberton and Miscouche), this year’s fo- cus has been on “Prince Edward Island in the 20th Century.”

Although the lectures in four of these locations have already been com-

pleted, the Charlottetown and Summerside compo- nents still have a number

left to go.

6n March 25, I had the opportunity to attend the lecture given by Allan Rankin and Perry Williams at the Eptek Centre in Summerside.

Entitled “A Century of Music on Prince Edward Island,” this discourse brought listeners through the history of our local mu- sic -- including bits on Don Messer and His Islanders,

Larry Gorman, as well as a sampling from both Rankin and Williams’ vast repetoire.

Incorporating live performances from these two talented performers, this was a lecture that not only educated, but also en- tertained.
