Miss Kate Parrerson, of Barney River, N. S., arrived in St. John, N. B., on Monday night, and took rooms at the Waverley House. On retiring she blew out the gas in her room. In the morning she was found ly- ing on the floor of her room perfectly insen- sible. She was, through meilical skill, re- stored to consciousness.

An attempt was made to try an important criminal case with a jury consisting of thirteen persons, but Mr. Long- worth interposed and decided to adhere to the old practice. ‘The personnel of the Petit Jury is excellent. They seem to be a body of men well qualified and most anxious to perform their functions in a firm and intelligent man- ner. A large and promiscuous audience is in daily attendance, and is delighted at the manner in which the Crown prosecutions are being conducted.

Somnambulism and Murder.

According to the daily papers, a prisoner was recently convicted at Edinburgh of having, while in a state of somnambulism, murdered his child and has since been set at liberty. Cases of this kind are very rare, but, assuming the somnambulism to be clearly proved, there can be little ques- tion of the course thus adopted.

Dornbluth, the German psychologist, tells of a young woman who, in consequence of a fright occasioned by an attack of robbers, was seized with epilepsy and became sub- ject to somnambulism. While in that con- dition she was in the habit of stealing articles, and was charged with theft, but, on the advice of Dornbluth, was released and eventually cured.

Steltzer gives an account of a somnam- bulist who clambered out of a garret win- dow, descended into the next house, and killed a young girl who was asleep there.

And the same learned writer quotes from Sarvarin an account of a somnambulist monk (related to Sarvarin by the prior of the convent where the incident happened): ‘The somnambulist entered the chamber of the prior; his eyes were opened but fixed, and the light of two lamps made no in- pression on him; his features were contract- ed, and he carried in his hands a large knife. Going straight to the bed, he had the appearance of examining if the prior were there. Uethen struck three blows, which pierced the coverings, and even a mat which served the purpose of a mattress. In returning his countenance was unbent and was marked by an air of satisfaction. The next day the prior asked the somnam- bulist what he had dreamed of the preced- ing night, and he answered that he had dreamt that his mother had been killed by the prior, and that her ghost had appeared to him demanding vengence; that at this sight he was so transported by rage that he had immediately run to stab the assassin

A Candid Journal.

Says the Boston Journal of Cominerce :— “Under all the local party differences in the Dominion, two classes of theorists have been quietly at work. One class advocates a reciprocity treaty, or a zollverein, witha view probably to ultimate annexation to the United States. Such annexation would, in the course of time, follow a customs union between the countries, as we pointed out in a recent article. The other class op- poses all tendencies to a freer trade with the United States and favors a retaliatory system of protection against us. Premier McKenzie headed the former party; Sir John A. McDonald the latter.” I, this is the way the American residénts and Ameri- can organs in Canada understood the ques- tion, their conduct in the canvass is suffi- ciently accounted for.

it has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances parties giving orders to truckmen and others for SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal. The Public are cautioned against permitting themselves to be imposed upon in this way.

Every vessci loaded at THE SYDNEY MINES is furnished with a certificate of the cargo being Sydney Coal. Parties purchasing should satisfy themselves by demanding the production of this certificate.
