Letter to the Editor
Ah, Mr. Beardsley, you make a good journalist - evade the topic, put words into peoples’ mouth, and see only what you want to see. Gee, you know with those qualities you would proba- bly make a successful politician.
I do not wish to turn the ed- itorial column into a hack and slash, perpetual rebuttal piece, that is not the purpose of an ed- itorial column; but your excuses for the inadequate press you gave the Lady Panthers with regards to CIAU basketball finals was, again, inadequate.
If you had read my original letter to the editor more care- fully you would have saved your- self a lot of print space in your “Sports Editorial” as I made no comment about a lack of pictures of the ladies, nor did comment on coverage of the team throughout the season by The Gem or any other news agency. In fact, I was impressed with this aspect dur- ing the year. My complaint was with the coverage of the national championships.
It’s nice that you went to Hal- ifax to watch the men, I’m really happy for you. Yes, being there would make it easier to write about those games. But that is no excuse for the dismal press you gave the women. How about in- terviews? One phone call to the Knickle household and you would have gotten four of them — three players and a spectator! How about Coach MacNeil? Coach Rowell? Cindy Doyle? Len Lang? Any of the other specta- tors that were there? The team members? Maybe you got back from Halifax late Sunday. What about all Monday morning and afternoon before your deadline? Mr. Beardsley, the women were second in the nation! They de- served better than what you saw fit to give them.
This letter was written for you, Mr. Beardsley; but if you decide to publish it then I would also like to add the following:
When I submitted my original letter to the editor a few weeks ago I requested that my name
be withheld from publication be- cause I wanted to be able to hear the response of members of the mens team to that letter without them knowing that I had written it and thus ’sensoring’ their com- ments and opinions when I was around. As it turned out, I was party to some of those conversa- tions only in a secondhand na- ture. Based on what I have heard I would like to say to the guys:
- “Gentlemen, to those of you who
saw my original letter as a per- sonal insult or an insult to the mens team, I apologize; and to I ask you to read it again and to see in it what I was trying to say, not to read into it your own views. To those of you who saw it for what it was — an attack on the article, not on your team — I commend you and say thank you. I also feel that some of you owe Susan an apology. Do not jump to conclu- sions, she did not write that let- ter, I did.”

What do I mean by Whipple’s biased? His biased against any- one not subscribing to his partic- ular (or if you like peculiar) way of thought.
Whipple seems to think (his articles have a definite slant to this) that he is the only “intel- lectual” on this campus that has
valid thoughts. How can he ex- clude everyone save he and a few select members of “Whipplect”. Whipple, let me inform you of something basic that will be of use to you later in life. There is beauty and intelligence in every-
one and everything; you just have e
to stop and look.

Does “Whipplect” state that you must at all times be conde- sending to the reader, and that you must act like you know more than any other human on the sub- ject?
Whipplect is a frightening thing... so frightening that I can’t finish the last piece written for the Gem by my fellow student. When Whipple commits intellec- tual bastardom he hurts himself and his credibility to his reading public.
What style and content is re- ally present in “Aloud Thought”? Is it not a column of ranting of an individual in the guise of one speaking for the many? Whip- plect would be very much at home in Nazi Germany because of its lack of focus on the common good.
Please, my dear editor, have a chat with this person. Please follow your journalistic instincts and edit to space and taste.
