Donation at Pownal,

A most enjoyable time was spent in Pownal Hall, on the evening of the 4ta inst., where, ‘according to their usual cus- tom, the good people of Pownat and sur- rounding settlements met to pay their respects to the Rey. Mr. Coulter and his estimable partner, and also to listen to one of the best musical and literary entertain - ments ever given in Pownal. Notwith- standing the unfavorable weather and the state of the roads, which prevented many from attending, the Hall was well filled by a most attentive and appreciative audience, whose sunny smiles, lighting up, honest, intelligent countenances, were pleasant to behold.

‘Richard Smith, Esq., presided, and by his able and ly conduct in the chair, contributed gréatly ‘to the success of

_|the entertainment. The Choir, under the

management of Mrs. Ethel M. Sentner, who ‘has justly wom the reputation of being oue of the,.best: musicians on’ the Island, acquitted themselves’ if a very créditable manner, anil » gave eonelusive proof that at no. distant, date, Pownal can boast of a choir second to none onthe Island.

Recitations by. Mrs. Colter, Miss | Joyoe L, Lane and Miss Layina Clarke; and readings by Messrs. A. A. Moore, W. A. Thompson, J, M. Campbell, A.. McLeod and

Master Percy Carver, were well received.

A vocal ductt by Miss Mary Maé¢rae and Miss Lillie Moore, and one by Mesars. L.

Sentner and J. M. Campbell were ramark-

ably well rendered. An instfumental duett by Mrs. Sentner and Mr. Géorge| : Moore was a rich musical treat; One feature’ of the | entertainment was a pleasant surprise to the audi-| ence, both on account of its rarity and the admirable manner in which it wes exeouted. Miss Carrio Sentner, a littie a, girl, nine years old, lately adopted by Mrs. Sentner, song two solos i im 80 sweet a voice and to such perfect time, as to call forth the warmest expressions of apprecia- tion from the audience. Both the ical and literary parts were of a high order, and were, without exception, well -sus- tained. At the close quite a tumber of beautiful cakes, contributed. by the ladies of the eongregation, were sold’ by anction.

One of the most beautiful of these was pur- chased by the gentlemen of the choir, and presented to Mrs. Sentner, as a slight token of their respect and esteem for her as their loader. A unanimous vote of thanks was tendered to the choir and also to the chairman, to which suitable replies were made; and afier sitging a parting hymn the audience dispersed. Quite a respect- able sum was raised for the benefit of the occupants of the Mission House, who were no doubt much pleased by this tangible evidence of the people’s appreéiation of their untiring efforts in the Master's Cause,

Another trot is expected as soon as the ice is in a condition suitable for the same.

The Good Templar Lodge here is doing good work, and is at present in a flourish- ing condition. that farming is the great industry of tlis Province, employing, at a very low esti- mate, over $12,000,000 of capital; that too little attention has been paid to agricultural education; that the tendency of the present school system is to make poor lawyers, un- skillful doctors and uninteresting ministers, and to take our young men away from the farm; that fa.ming is now, as muchas any other profession, a matter of education; and that farmers in their homes, after their day’s work is done, ought tobe as particu-

lar with respect to their appearance and habits as. other gentlemen. He described the model farm house, and advised the ladies that they had as good a claim to obtain all needful conveniences for doing their work as the farmer had for doing his part. In concluding, he paid a eee compliment to the ennobling work of the agriculturist; and in order to stimulate the

boys) of. this. section of the’ Island to .take an interest in doing their work in the best manner, he asked

the Association to arrange a ploughing match for boys under seventeen years of age, towards the expense of which he would contribute $10, and he expressed the hope that he might be abla to attend at the time and place to see the contest.

Remarks were made by Messrs. John Hamiiton, John Parker, George F.: Owen,

.GyrusShaw, F. G. Bovyer, Wm. Kaneen

and others. While all the speakers did not entirely agree with some of the poinis of the leeture, yet the opinion was unani- mous: that Mr. Palmer's lecture was weil worthy of being published, and they thope that such will be dore.

The thanks of the meeting and an honor- ary membership of the Association were tendered Mr. Palmer, both of which he accepted and acknowledged in a spirited speech, egpressing his gratification at the reception accorded him, and atthe work

Several new members were added to the roll, and it. was resolved that a question box shouid be provided for the reception of questions for discussion. The next meeting will be held in New Perth Schoolhouse, on Tuesday, March 16th inst., at 6.30 p. m., when F. G. Bovyer, Eeq., will read'a paper

Temperance Progressing.

A large and influential meeting was held at East Royalty on Tuesday ovening, the 9th inst., by the members of the Lodge of I, O. G. T., recently organized at that place. The object of [the meeting was to devise the best means for the carrying out of the Canada Temperance Act, and the signing of a petition 'to be placed before the Governor in Council, praying for the appointment of two inspectors to rigidly enforce the restrictions of that act.

After some well-chosen remarks by the chairman, Mr. Patrick Berrigan, able and enthusiastic speeches pertaining to the great responsibility resting on all Temper- ance advocates, &c., were delivered by Messrs. John Prowse, James Coulson, H. J. Smith, J. Chappelle and others. Many thanks are due to Mr. J. Jackson, Mr. F. Stanley and Mr.D. Stanley, of the city, who so ably entertained the ‘audience with songs and recitations, A recitation by John Chappelle and a seng by J. Gardiner formed a very pleasing part of the en*er- tainment. At the close, the above men- tioned petition was ivimerously signed by all the leading men «f the district. The meeting was dispersed by singing ‘‘God Save the Queen,” when all returned to their homes, feeling that they had spent a very pleasant evening.
