Since last report three West Indiamen have arrived with 190 puns. and 6 hhds. molasses, 75 hhds. and 120 bbls. sugar. | The exports to the West Indies have been | 493 bbls. mackerel, 724 bbls. herring, 3,456 bbls. potatoes, 756 quintals, 1,122, tierces, 700 drums, 340 casks, 285 boxes and 396 half-boxes of dry fish. The receipts at this | port were 15,785 quintals. The West indian market for dry fish is bad and ad- vices warn against shipments. Mackerel receipts for the week were 1,355 bbls. and shipments 2,051 bbls., chiefly to the New York market. All the stocks of small mackerel are cleared off, and quotations do not govera any but small lots remaining.

Compared with Oct. , 1878, there has been an increase of $17,176 in the Customs re- ceipts at this port for Oct. During the months of July, Aug., Sept. and Oct. the Inland Revenue receipts have increased $46,726 compared with corresponding period last year.

MONTREAL PROVISION MARKETS.

Butter. —Demand continues good ; prices have advanced about 2c ; holders are now wanting outside quotations, which are rather above buyers’ views. Cheese mar- ket’steady at 12c to 13c, according to make. Ingersoll advices an Tuesday reported offer- ings of $,500 boxes September and October make ; no sales; buyers offer 12c, 124c asked. Pork firmer at $14.50 to 15.50 for New Mess. Lard: Chicago pails scarce ; nominally firmer ; Canada pails, 10¢ to 1Ohe.,

COTTON AND WOOLLEN MANUFACTURES.

The vote for the establishment of a cot- ton factory at Farnham, Que., offering a bonus of $25,000 therefor, was taken in that place on Tuesday, and carried by a majority of 830—98 being for and 18 against the by-law. ‘The rate-payers of St. Johns, Que., are seriously considering the advis ability of establishing a woollen or other manufactery there. Ata meeting of citi- zens held last Tuesday, the Mayor of the town said that a large manufacturer and capitalist was willing to start a factory of some kind in that place, provided the peo- ple voted him a bonues of $20,000 to $25,- 000. His Worship was requested to call another meeting of ratepayers to consider the matter.

ADVANCE IN THE PRICE OF RUBBER GOODS.

At ameeting of the representatives of the principa| rubber manufacturing companies, held on the Ist inst., at the office of N. Southwick & Son, New York, it was unani- mously resolved to advance the prices of all kinds of rubber boots and shoes 20 per4 cent over those hitherto prevailing.

RAILWAY NOTES.

The Montreal Witness says : The freight traffic on the Grand Trunk is the heaviest known for years. In spite of the immense rolling stock, great difficulty exists in ob- taining cars to accommodate shippers.

The Grand Trunk Railway have received from England per steamship ‘‘Quebec,” 150 stee!-tired 42 inch wheels for passenger service. These wheels are gradually re- placing the eld 36 inch chilled iron wheels, as they last longer and are more economical in mileage.

BEET SUGAR REFINERY.

The Windsor, N. S., Mail says :—The State of Maine Sugar Beet Refinery has offered to invest capital to the amount of $400,000 in erecting a refinery in Nova Seotia, provided that the Counties of An- napolis, Kings, Hants and Colchester will guarantee each to put under cultivation 1000 acres of land to raise sugar beets. The order of Grangers have the movement in hand.’

CATTLE FOR ENGLAND.

Says a Quebec despatch of last evening : 239 head of cattle and 286 sheep will got, England per 8. 8. ‘‘ Scandinavian.’

OATS AND BARLEY IN MONTREAL.

Oats have, in Mentreal, sold at 32 cents.

The arrivals of ocean-going vessels at the port of Montrealjup to Monday last, number 435, the departure numbering 497. For the same date last year the arrivals footed up to 473, and the departures 435, which shows this season an increas» of 62 arrivals and 60 departures.

GREAT SALE OF MACKEREL.

We find the following in the Yarmouth, N.. S. Herald: ‘One hundred and five

barrels of the largest and fattest mackerel

ever brought into Gloucester were caught

off Thatcher’s Island a few days ago. It

tookfonly eighty of them to fill a barrel, and

they brought at wholesale $40 per bbl.,

the highest price ever obtained in Boston.” GOLD FOR NEW YORK.

A New York despatch says: The steam- ship ‘‘City of Brussels” brought $200,000, and the ‘‘Weser” brought $950,000 in Bri- tish bars and American gold coin.
