“The anxiousest kind of anxious. He feels that he has got to tackle that dude or chaw a rag, and as a starter he hauls off and spit terbacker-juice on the little one’s shiny shoes. Mebbe he expects the dude to run away, but he didn't fly wuth acent. He stays right there and looks Jim all over and smiles and says: ‘Me deah fellah, will you kindly take your handerchief and remove the—aw— ye knaw?”

But Jim didn’t remove?” queried the officer.

“Becher life he didn't! He jest looks all around to see if there's a copper in sight, and then he reaches out and tries to poke his finger into the little one’s eye. He don't git there, however. Chappie jumps back and says: *‘Weally, me deah boy, I cawn't put up with such familiarity, doncher knaw--cawn't sibly doit! If you go to frolic with me I shall be obliged to hurt ye, doncher knaw!'”

“And then, ef course, Jim sailed in to mash him?”

“Of course. Spit on his hands and sailed in to wreck chappie’s bloomin’ future. but sunthin’ happened. The little feller drops his cane, puts up his éukes, and in one blessed minute Jim was 4 licked man. Chappie skips around him, and climbs s over him, and fights two handed, and by and by he swings fur the jaw and Jim goes over that box and falls asleep like a bloomin’ summer even’, and it wasn t two minits ago that he opened his bloomin’ eyes.’

“Oh, he stops a minit to pick up his cane and shake a wrinkle outer his pants, and then goes off sayin’: ‘Sorry to do it, ye knaw, bat I weally had a Wanted to poke me in the eye, doncher see, and I seenh allow it—nevah. Fel lakhs, au revoir.’ ”

Remedy for Damp Walls. ”

The process consists in using two washes or solutions for covering the surface re the walls—one composed of castile soap and water, and one cf alum and w ate ‘r. The proportions are three- juarters of a pound if soap to one gal- lon of water, and half a pound of alum to fonr gallons of water, both substan- ces to be perfectly clean and dry, and the temperature of the air not above 25 degrees Fahrenheit when the composi- tions are ap yplied.,

Phe first, or soap wash, should be laid on when boiling hot with a flat brush, taking care to form a froth on the brick- work. This wash should remain twenty- foar hours, 80 as to become dry and hard before the second or alum wash is applied, which should be done in the same manner as the first. The temper- ature of this wash when aprlied may be 60 or 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and this also should remain twenty-four hours before a second coat of soap wash is put on These coats are to be applied al- ternately until the walls are made im pervious to water. The alum and soap thus combined form an insoluble com pound, filling the pores of the masonry and entirely preventing the water from entering the wall.— Architect and Builder.

Artistic Tatooing.

Probably the most artistically tatooed man in the world is William Furness, a son of Dr. Horace Howard Furnesss, the noted Shakespeari: sn scholar. Mr Furness spent a long term in Japan, and it was there that the figures that adorn his body were executed. A splendid re

A pagoda is designed on one shoulder, and a fearfu) and wonderful collection of geometrical designs covers the other shoulder. A Chinese boat is tatooed on one leg and a dragoon looks up from the other. The artist who executed these designs was paid $12 an hour for his services, an appalling fee in that coun try, where 25 cents per diem isa princely salary.—Philadelphia Record.
