Frederi:: Harrison on Education “It has long been a favorite idea of mine hat many things work delightfally for good while they are spontaneous and unorganized, but when they are stereotyped into an elaborate art and evolve a special profession or trade of experts, they produce unexpected failures and end in more harm than good.” In this sentence is contained the underlying thought of Mr. Frederic Har ison’s remasks on education in the +orum for December, says the Review of of Reviews for January Mr. Harrison’s observations have led him to lieve that the less we systematize education and dogmatize about it the better. Kducation should not be treated as if it were a special art. [t cannot be ta: ght, “like playing the violin.” Minds are too various and too subtle to be prescribed for specifically. “We ask,’ he continues, ‘‘too muchfrom education, we make too mach of it, we monstrously over-organize it, and we cruelly overlvad ic. The genial lighthouse keeper of Souris ceased lighting the lamp on the 17rh inst. The 8th of this month is the usual time for allowing this light to go eut, bat this year is an exception. Mr McDonald is a faith- ful and proficient officer, and as he baa to keep his lamp trimmed and burning every yesr for weeks after other lights on the coast are extinguished, he is justly entitled to more pay.

The usual week of prayer at Souris was postponed owing 'o the iliness of one of the resident clergymen. Meetings are now held in the Methodist and Presbyterian churches aliernately.

The Sons of Temperance have rented McD.maidi’s Hall fron the W C T OU. Chey meet once a week. Several have jomed lately, and the cause is said to be now in the ascendant.

This has been a wonderful season in more waysthan one. The recent achi-vement of [. P. O'Connor in producing withia one week a comp ehensive life of Mr. é. S. Parnell is a no-eworthy but by no means unexampled instance of fast literary work. Goldsmith wrote his classic “Vicar of Wakefield” under even greater pressure, for an officer of the law stood at his elbow to expedite matters. Marion Crawford's ‘Mr. Isaac's” was the resuit of a month's work; and other authors, when the f-enzy was on, have exhibited remarkable bursts of speed in composition. Horace Greely, for ex ample, wrote his **Printer” in thirty minutes. It was composed to be read at a Press Club benefit, and Mr. Greely rose from bed at mid- night to write it, after the poet chosen for the occasion had shown himseif unequal to the task.

Eduestional Journal: There is no more common, or, to our thinking, more mischievous educational heresy than that which claims that the teacher stsnds to the child, for the time being, in the relation of parent. The teacher cannot take the place of the parent, and should not attempt te doso. One of many reasons is that the instinctive affection is waating on both sides, an indispensable factor. The teacher shuuld, in the interest of parent and child, as well as in his own interest, impress upon parents that he or she does not usurp their tunctions, but relies on the parental train- ing and discipline for those elements in the child’s character which alone cao make the latter subservient to the authority of the
