The Gas works are now nearl completed, and are being pushed forward wi much vigor hv the Directors. and Mr. Allen their agent. We believe that all the mason work, including the tank, rptort house, furnaces,_cliimney ilcc, are now finished ;_ the gas holder is also ready, the main pipe is laid through Church and water streets, the service pipes are now being laid down, and the Gas ‘litters have been at work for sotne weeks putting in the necessary fixtures in she s and dwel tng. A very few weeks, we thin , will suflice to _have_ the works in o ration,and the gas burntiig in _most of the lenses in water street. It is it ity that no steps have yet been taken to have t e streets lights ; but we suppose no person will move in the matter until its importa_nce is foroedu it their attention h the dark nights and mu dy streets of Novcm -r and December. _

'Ihe streets and side walks are now being opened in every direction for laying down ser- vice pipes from the main pipe to _the houses, and strangers should be cautious in walking or driving through the streets, particularly after night, as many holes have necessarily to he left open from one day'to another, present- ing dtutgcrous traps and pitfalls, which might cause serious injury to the uuwary.—Ptclau Eastern Chronicle.

The parties who committed the robbery on the Coach between ’I‘ruro and Pictou, have been discovered. They are two young men of the naiiic of Pratt whose family ive near the stage stables at Salmon River. They are both now in jail in Truro. Both the Trunk and Mail bag were found in the wood shalfa mile from Pratt's house. We understand that the contents of the Trunk, excepting a few articles, have been recovcredf but the dpapers in the mail bag were torn and destroys .

We notice and but barely notice, the comment on the public meeting, respecting the loss of the " Fairy Queen " as given by Mr. Whelun in the last Royal Gazette. It is one continued falsehood from begin- Iting to end. There was no attempt to prevent Mr. Lord’ lions being heard, on the contrary, he was heard with the utmost attention ; there was, it is true, a loud laugh when Mr. Lord stated. that all that the Rev. Dr. Evans said was true, and yet, that the [-‘giry Queen was a good boat alter all: but it was over is a moment. And Mr. Lord candidly stated that the Resolutions were moderate, very moderate, much milder than be expected. With regard to the words made use of by Mr. Wholun. we will not say, whether the word “col|caguos," might not have been the word usod.instusd ofmombors of the Government; but we do positively deny that the word, “ perhaps or any thing eqnivalsnl to it, was made use of by Mr. Wholau. I"ar from being made in a mild manner and tone, it was the very reverse, so much so, that the writer he boon told by several persons who take no psrtin politics, that had the some thing occurred in many other places, Mr. Wlielun would have been roughly handled. After the assertion made by Mr. Wholan diet the tender of Mr. Whitney was sent in intii-no, an assertion contradicted by tho Hon.Geo Coles. who, in this respect at least, gives the true version of the slfair, who can place Ibo lonstconfi- deuce in what liu—Wholsn-—saysI In the case of the qualification for a seat in the Legislature, we ox- prsssod at the time our conviction, that the unfortu- nate mun, though he had unquestionably sworn to that which was false, had done so through his igno- runcs of the tenures of laud; these ropsstod instances of want of veracity, and principle, would incline us liowover to put a rather ssvoro construction on his conduct, and we fear entitled it to the term given to it by our contemporary the Islsndor. And yet, this susn's same is inserted in the commission of the Peace, so that he may become " a terror unto evil doors, and the praise of thorn tltstdo well." If it were not, for thsgroat injury done, not only to the administration of Justice, but the morale cfthe com- munity, by such injudicious uppsintnsnls, we could heartily laugh, at the absurdity of the idea.

We must not be understood as in the slightest do- groe aiming to convey any consurs upon his Excel- lency the Liout. Governor, who, we doubt act, has in this case, been induced to make the appointment not of his own more motion but by the advice of those who are called, but alas ! are not his consti- tutional sdvisors.

MICMAC MISSION.

A public meeting was held in the Baptist Chapel Charlottetown, on Monday evening, 24 inst., Coin. Orlehar in the chair. The house was crowded to overflowing. The Chairman briefly explained the object of the meeting. Four years ago a Mission, embracing all the evunggical denominations in these Provinces, had It commenced, with a view to the sme- lioration of the condition of the Indians. This document was listend to by the meeting with the most profound attention. It sets forth according to the Iiidian’s own ideas of it, the treatment which they have sus- tained at the hands of the white man. They complain of wrongs sushinod, of violated treaties, of neglect, oppression, and outrage. 'I‘hcse complaints. are, alas, too well founded. They ask for "union, and justice should be gran- ted them. he Petition will robably be refer- ed hack to the colonial legis ture, and must receive souie consideration, whatever results may be obtained. The Petition will hereafter be published, so that an investigation of its truth can be entered into. r. Rand also read a paper to the ineetin , signed by a number of heads of Indian families, expressive of their

esire to be instructed in the arts and sciences, and that their children should be taught to road the word of God, and stating that they would thankfully embrace the oifer of stated employment, a permanent abode, and school for their children. Such an eshblishment is to be forthwith commenced at Hantsport, anew and thriving village near Windsor, Nova T ‘s place combines many advantages for such an institution. C. who mi ht hap n to be present, whether the darkosnd egrnd state of the Micmac tribe so long under t e instruction of their church, did not fully justify the efiirts now making by this mission, to educateand raise them in the state of social life and whether such efibrts should bemet with an feelin on their port.—He then said he believed the feel- ings o all who had the privilege of Mr. Rand's acquaintance was on the one and regret that the vcr success of their missionary's efibrts rendered it necessary for him to remove from this Island, and on the other, that from their long acquaintance with him, they had the fullest confidence in his qualifications for the self- dcnying work to which the believed the Pro- vidence of God had called im, and whilst in the name of the meeting he wished him God speed, he would he , that he would be remem- bered and follow whilst in midst the of his Indian family by the prayers of those whom he left be 'nd

By ii letter which arrived last evening, we learn that the Steamer Commodoe, plying be- tween the Bend of Peticodiac and the city of St. John, N. B. is reported to have sunk in the Funday. The ‘- Commodore" was a sister Steamer to the unfortunate “Fairy Queen.”
