The general expens? of holding the Exhibition was $20,000. That is to say, the total amount for which the Association was responsibie , was 865.000. The total receipts from | all sources was $52,500. A Suaare Boy.—The other day a sharp looking youth walked up quick- ly to the counter of the post office in a country town and emptying a bag of coppers thereon asked the clerk, who was attending to other customers, for a dollar’s worth of one cent stamps.

‘Oh, you be bothered !’ was the an- swer ; 'Phat’s not a legal tender; it is ail copper.’

‘What is a legal tender, then?’ asked the boy.

‘Why, one cent is a legal tender for a one cent stamp.’

‘Oh ? exclaimed the youth ‘is it? Conic on then,’ passing a coin from the heap; ‘: one cent stamp, please.’

The clerk gave him one,

‘ Another please.’ .

A second one was given him.

‘Tfere, stop that,’ the clerk said, ‘Give me the raoney. It will be the shortest way to get rid of you.’ |

The colored people of Toronto had their share of Vice-Regal attention dur- ing the Viee-Regal visit there. The night before their Excellencies left To- ronto for Ottawa, a colored band sere-}. naded them at Government House dur- ing dinner time, and acquitted itself creditably. ‘The members of the band were dined, if not wined, by his Excel- leney in the servant’s hall. ‘Two little coloved yirls present were presented to the Prineess who shook hands with them cordially, accepted bouquets from them an! talked to them kindly about their schooling, etc. Such manifesta- tions of interest aud sympathy on the part of persons placed as the Marquis and Princess are cost little; but in their effect they count for a groat deal.

A sensational story has been going the rounds of the American press to the effect that Mr. Langtry, whose principal title to celebrity is that he is the husband of Mrs. Lanytry, was about to bring an action against his wife and the Priace of Wales in the Matrimonial Court. It is pleasing to be able con ‘ of the rnuor. Mr. Langtry, it 1s true, in tends bringing an action, but not against his wife or the Prince. The defendant will be the proprietor of the English journal which started the canard. Even the hus- band of a fashionable beauty has rights which the gutter-snipe press must be mad: to respect.
